Men's Lacrosse Falls to Tenth-Ranked Lynchburg, 23-3

LYNCHBURG, Va. – In the final road contest of the 2014 season, the Bridgewater Eagles men's lacrosse team held close with 10th-ranked Lynchburg College in the early part of the contest before falling by a 23-3 score to the Hornets in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action on Wednesday evening.

Lynchburg (12-4, 7-1 ODAC) scored the first two goals of the contest prior to the Eagles getting on the board in the first frame. Midway through quarter number one, sophomore Rob Simmons ripped a shot into the back of the net to cut the Hornets' lead to 2-1. The goal for Simmons was his 15th of the season.

The host Hornets answered the Bridgewater score with two goals from Rob Arnold and a Chris Cornelius tally to run out to a 5-1 advantage later in the first frame. Bridgewater found the back of the net for the second time of the evening on a Derrick Daniels tally, his 16th of the year, to cut the Lynchburg advantage to 5-2. Freshman Matthew Arndt assisted on the Daniels goal.

Lynchburg's Austin Stewart capped off the scoring in the first quarter to open an eight-goal run for the Hornets which would eventually see the host team take a 13-2 lead in the third quarter.

Bridgewater (5-10, 0-8 ODAC) added its final goal of the day when sophomore Thomas Maher took an Arndt pass and found the back of the net to cut the Lynchburg lead to 13-3 with 8:28 to play in the third.

Following the Maher tally, Lynchburg scored the final 10 goals of the contest to take a 23-3 victory over the Eagles.

Bridgewater tallied 13 shots on the evening with Daniels, Maher and Simmons leading the way with a goal each.

Freshman Conor Lawson picked up the loss for the Eagles despite making 17 saves.

Six different players scored multiple goals for the Lynchburg attack as the Hornets amassed 71 shots on the evening. Andrew Fawkes picked up the win for the Hornets after making one save over the first 30 minutes.

Bridgewater returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Randolph-Macon for the regular season finale. Start time against the Yellow Jackets is set for 1 p.m.
