Eagles Drop Season-Opener At Catholic, 15-7

WASHINGTON D.C. – Catholic jumped out to a 5-1 lead after one quarter of play Saturday afternoon and the Cardinals went on to post a 15-7 victory over Bridgewater College in non-conference men's lacrosse action.

The Cardinals got on the board early with an unassisted goal by Ethan Rodriguez at the 12:38 mark of the opening period. Jonathan Curran added a goal with 11:14 left in the quarter, making the score 2-0.

Catholic added three goals in a one-minute stretch to push its lead to 5-0. Jack Oakes scored two of the Cardinals' goals.

Bridgewater scored its first goal of the season when freshman Blake Mann scored off an assist from Rob Simmons with 6:50 left in the opening quarter, trimming the margin to 5-1.

The score remained 5-1 until Catholic's Andrew Christman tallied with 5:40 left in the second quarter. A goal by Victor Licata gave Catholic a 7-1 lead before an unassisted goal by Bridgewater Derrick Daniels made the score 7-2.

Catholic outscored the Eagles 4-3 in the third quarter to lead 11-5. After goals by Catholic's Oakes and Tim Keith, Bridgewater scored three straight to pull to within 9-5. Jeff Strickland scored off a pass from Aaron Kiser and Thomas Maher added two unassisted goals for the Eagles.

The Cardinals answered with goals by Curran and Rodriguez to lead 11-5 after three quarter.

Catholic put the game away with four unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to take a 15-5 lead. Mann scored off an assist from Landon Elmore and Simmons found the back of the net in the final minute to complete Bridgewater's scoring.

Catholic finished the contest with a 50-29 shot advantage. Rodriguez led the Cardinals with four goals while Maher topped the Eagles with two goals scored. Daniels and Maher each took six shots to lead Bridgewater.

Andrew Buss played the entire game in goal for the Eagles and finished with 19 saves. Catholic goalie Harrison Holak registered nine saves.

Bridgewater returns to action next Saturday when the Eagles host Frostburg State. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
