Eagles' Attack Held in Check in Season Opener

Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team couldn't convert on their opportunities, falling to host Christopher Newport 19-2 in the Eagles' season opener.

Bridgewater totaled 23 shots, including 13 on target, but only managed to find the back of the cage once in each half. That included a first half where CNU held a shot advantage of just 22-15 but opened up a 9-1 lead.

The Captains were backstopped by goalie Hanna Slough, who made 11 saves while conceding just twice.

The Eagles' two goals came from Meredith Wimbrow and Jenna Devilbiss.

Sophomore goalie Rachel Gruber made 11 saves of her own for Bridgewater. Devilbiss added two caused turnovers and four ground balls, while senior Caroline Augsburger and freshman Kayla O'Sullivan also forced two giveaways each.

The Eagles won the game's first two draw controls but then turned the ball over on both occasions. Devilbiss had a chance on goal early but was saved by Slough, and Meghan Galvin scored at the other end for a 2-0 Christopher Newport lead.

Again Bridgewater won the draw control, but followed with a turnover. Paige Hennessey had a shot blocked and Erin Callahan converted a free position for a 3-0 CNU advantage.

Kylie Chaplin hit the post for the Captains, and Wimbrow earned a free position chance but was denied by Slough. Caroline Fletcher also had a shot saved, just before Catie Chess made it 5-0 for the hosts.

Callahan's free position goal made it 8-0, with Devilbiss finally getting Bridgewater on the board with 10:19 remaining in the first half.

Galvin opened the second half scoring, with CNU soon opening up a double-digit lead with 27:13 left to play.

Colleen Bourgal and Wimbrow exchanged man-advantage goals midway through the second half, with Wimbrow's tally making it 13-2 Christopher Newport.

The Captains led 16-2 heading into the final five minutes and added three more before the final whistle, with goals coming from Lindsay Weaver (a free position shot and then a shorthanded score) and Carly Wilson.

Bridgewater College (0-1) will hold its home opener on Saturday in the Jopson Athletic Complex, vs. Southern Virginia at 4 p.m.

The Eagles will also be at home on Wednesday, March 4 vs. Frostburg State before embarking on their spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C. That week will include neutral site games against Elms College and Drew University.
