Eagles Hang With Guilford on the Road, Lose 12-7

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse hung around with Guilford College, trailing by just three into the fourth quarter of an eventual 12-7 loss.

Guilford had come in with an impressive set of results so far in the season, including a 12-6 win over Catholic (who defeated Bridgewater in the Eagles' opener) and double-digit victories over four other teams in 2015.

Freshman Blake Mann scored two goals to tie Chris Voorhees' school single season record of 23. He also moved within a point of Derrick Daniels' school mark of 27.

Thomas Maher had two points with a goal and an assist. Lucas Clark led the defense with six ground balls, and goalie Michael Fairley made seven saves.

The Eagles jumped all over Guilford early. After winning the opening faceoff, Daniels had a good attempt saved by Thomas Deane. Maher scored in the second minute of play to get the Eagles on the board.

Daniels and Mann were each saved by Deane, but Guilford failed on a clear and Bridgewater broke back the other way for a 2-0 advantage.

Bridgewater picked up a one-minute slashing penalty in the early going but Fairley stopped Alex Brownlee's shot and BC killed off the penalty.

Guilford surged back into the lead with three goals in the final 6:12 of the opening quarter- from Dylan Haupt, Derek Spaulding (after another Eagles slash) and Cole Woodward.

Trailing 3-2 after the first quarter, the Eagles' Sam Cheplick won the opening faceoff and Clark picked up the ground ball. The Eagles passed to Maher, who hit Mann for the quick strike tally to tie the contest.

Coming out of a Guilford timeout with under three minutes left in the half, Haupt hit the post. The Eagles cleared and called a timeout of their own, setting up a shot by Mann that was saved. Guilford led 7-4 at the break after setting up one final successful play for Brownlee before the horn.

Trailing 9-5 late in the third quarter, Rob Simmons got a big goal for the Eagles in the final minute to keep them within three heading in the final period.

The Eagles had a golden opportunity to pull within two after a crosschecking penalty early in the fourth, but Voorhees shot wide and Guilford's Nick Huckins caused a turnover to end the threat.

Guilford finally pulled away with a Duncan Fitzgerald goal and Chandler Zirkle's man-up tally in the fourth quarter.

Haupt had a hat trick for Guilford while Brownlee added two goals and three assists. Deane made nine saves on 16 shots on goal.

The Eagles fall to 4-6, 0-3 ODAC while Guilford improves to 6-2, 2-2.

Bridgewater will host Frostburg State on Tuesday, in a game that was originally postponed back on February 21 due to snow.
