Eagles Split ODAC Baseball Doubleheader With Guilford

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College rallied with single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to win Game 2 and salvage a split of Saturday's doubleheader with the Bridgewater College Eagles in ODAC baseball action. The Eagles held on for a 7-5 win in the opener while the Guilford rally produced a 7-6 victory for the Quakers in Game 2.

Bridgewater ( 14-6-1, 5-6 in the ODAC) jumped out to an early 6-1 lead after three innings in the opener and held on for the victory.

The teams traded single runs in the first inning.

Derrik Walling led off the game for Bridgewater and reached on a throwing error. Walling was erased at second on Austin Batten's groundout and then Darren Yoder was retired on a fly ball for the second out of the inning. Batten stole second and scored on Kenner Berry's single to left, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

The bottom of the first starting the same way as the top half of the inning as Guilford's leadoff hitter Herc Ingels was safe at first on shortstop Brandon Poole's throwing error. Ingles moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Charles Noble's two-out single through the right side, tying the score at one run apiece.

Justin Petock walked to lead off the Eagles' second and Brendan Howell followed with a single through the right side of the infield. Both runners moved up on Poole's sacrifice bunt and Hunter Hensley walked to load the bases. Walling chase home two runs with a single and Batten plated a run with his RBI-groundout as the Eagles moved out to a 4-1 lead.

Bridgewater added two more runs in the top of the third. Berry reached on an error to lead off the inning and Ryan Leake singled. Both runners advanced on Petock's sacrifice bunt and both scored on Poole's two-out hit through the left side of the infield, making the score 6-1.

Guilford (7-17, 3-10 in the ODAC) nicked Eagles's starter Steven Woerner for a run in the bottom of the fourth on Ingels' run-scoring single, but the Eagles negated that run with a single tally in the top of the fifth.

Berry and Leake led off the fifth with consecutive singles. Leake was forced out at second on Petock's grounder, leaving the Eagles with runners at the corners. Berry scored on a groundout to first by Howell, giving Bridgewater a 7-2 cushion.

The Quakers started pecking away at the deficit with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Noble reached first and advanced to second on a throwing error by third baseman Batten to lead off the frame. With one out, Trey Mabry singled to put runners on the corners and a walk to Guy Woodliff loaded the sacks. Jacob Roberts then ripped a two-run double down the left-field line to pull the Quakers closer at 7-4. Woerner retired the next two batters on a grounder back to the mound and a pop-up to second to avoid further trouble.

Guilford added another run in the sixth. Kyle Humphrey led off for the Quakers and reached first when Poole dropped his infield fly. Humphrey moved to third on a single by Josh Shepherd and scored on a sacrifice fly by Grayson Tuttle to pull Guilford to within two, 7-5. Shepherd stole second and took third on Mabry's single, putting runners on the corners with two outs. Brady Cockerham then came out of the bullpen to relieve Woerner and the Eagles lefty struck out Woodliff to strand two runners on the basepaths.

Woerner turned in a solid start on the mound for the Eagles as only two of the five runs he allowed in his 5.2 innings of work were earned. He worked out of trouble on several occasions as he allowed nine hits and walked four batters. Cockerham picked up the save as he allowed no runs on four hits in the final 3.1 innings.

Berry and Leake collected three hits each to lead the Eagles 11-hit attack. Walling and Poole each drove in a pair of runs.

The offense followed a similar script in Game 2 as the Eagles once again struck early.

Walling walked to lead off the first inning and moved to third on a single by Yoder. Walling scored on Berry's base hit for a 1-0 Bridgewater lead.

The Eagles tacked on three more runs in the third. Walling led off with a double and scored on Batten's single, making it 2-0. A single by Yoder put runners at first and second before a single by Berry scored Batten for a 3-0 Eagles lead. Yoder and Berry each advanced a base on a long fly ball by Leake and Yoder scored on a groundout by Howell, making the score 4-0.

The Quakers cut the lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Eagles got one run back in the top of the fifth. Berry doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch. Howell singled up the middle with two outs, scoring Berry to make the score 5-2.

Guilford took advantage of another Eagles error in the bottom of the fifth to score two more runs, cutting Bridgewater's lead to 5-4.

The Qaukers pulled even with a run in the seventh. Tyler Peterson led off with a triple and scored on a one-out single by Hunphrey, tying the game at 5-5.

The Eagles pulled ahead with a run in the top of the eighth, but the Quakers responded with one run in the bottom half of the inning.

Poole singled to lead off the Eagles eighth and moved to second on a sac bunt by Hensley. Batten delivered a clutch two-out single to score Poole, putting BC back on top 6-5.

In the bottom of the eighth a single and two walks loaded the bases for the Quakers. With one out, Ingels plated a run with a sacrifice fly, tying the game at 6-6.

The Quakers pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on Austin Wilson's two-out single up the middle for the final 7-6 margin of victory.

Berry was 3-for-5 in the second game to lead BC's 13-hit attack. Walling, Batten and Yoder added two hits each.

Brigewater starter Petock pitched six innings and allowed four runs, all unearned on six hits. Leake, the Eagles fourth pitcher of the contest took the loss on the mound.

Bridgewater returns to action Monday afternoon with a non-conference home contest against Ferrum College. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
