Eagles Come Up Just Short at Roanoke

Box Score

ROANOKE, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team played another close game against an ODAC playoff contender, losing 11-9 at Roanoke on Monday night.

Bridgewater was coming off a hard-fought 10-7 loss to Lynchburg two days earlier. The Eagles had lost to Roanoke by double-digits in each of the past two seasons.

Junior Jessie Colligan led the Eagles with three goals, six draw controls and four ground balls. Classmate Caroline Fletcher added two goals and an assist. Sophomore goalie Rachel Gruber made eight saves.

The Eagles held Roanoke, who led 6-4 at the half, to one goal in the opening 12:30 of the second half.

Fletcher opened the second half scoring to pull Bridgewater within one, and Colligan scored with 19:22 remaining to again make it a one-goal game at 7-6.

Roanoke responded with four straight goals in under seven minutes to make it 11-6 and seemingly put the game away.

Bridgewater rallied from the 8-meter line in the final five minutes however. Jenna Devilbiss converted a free position shot to cut the deficit to four, and Fletcher and Colligan added man-up free position goals to make it 11-9.

With 48 seconds remaining Colligan won the draw control, but the Eagles would eventually turn the ball over to end the game.

Fletcher had assisted senior Paige Hennessy with 3:13 remaining in the first half to tie the game at 4-4.

Roanoke went into the half with a 6-4 lead after two goals from Claire Feeney in the final two minutes of the opening period, coming just 36 seconds apart.

Meredith Wimbrow had opened the scoring with 23:05 on the clock, on an assist from Devilbiss. BC kept Roanoke scoreless until the ninth minute of play, and Claire Palermo-Re tied it at 2-all with 16:36 left in the first half after Roanoke had taken its first lead of the day.

Meredith Bigelow pushed Roanoke's advantage to 4-2, but Colligan scored unassisted and then Hennessy followed 80 seconds later to tie the contest.

Roanoke goalie Lauren Curtin made 11 saves as Bridgewater was outshot by just three, 29-26, and was ahead in the turnover battle 17-15.

Feeney finished with four goals while Darraugh Evans had three each of goals and assists.

Bridgewater falls to 5-5, 2-2 ODAC and has another tough ODAC road game on Saturday at Randolph-Macon.
