BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team scored eight second half goals to hold off Shenandoah, beating the Hornets 11-8 on Wednesday night at Jopson Field.
Matthew Arndt had five assists for the Eagles, while Chris Voorhees and Blake Mann both registered hat tricks.
Voorhees also picked up four ground balls. Lucas Clark totaled three caused turnovers and eight ground balls, Sam Cheplick won 10-of-15 faceoffs to go with five ground balls, and goalie Andrew Buss had another solid day in the cage with 13 saves.
Tied 4-4 with 8:18 left in the third, defender Sean Nevin cleared, gathered himself for a second, and then ripped a bounce shot into the cage from way outside to take the lead for good.
Voorhees hit his second pipe of the game soon after but Mann struck with 5:46 on the clock for a two-goal advantage.
With 2:19 remaining in the third period, Clark caused a turnover and countered the other way. His pass went to Arndt- who fed Mann for the goal. Shenandoah picked up a slashing penalty to boot, and Thomas Maher tallied man-up for an 8-4 lead.
Shenandoah cut the deficit to two with 8:13 to play, before the Eagles answered with two more. Mann scored for a 10-7 lead, and Voorhees responded to a point-blank save to score his third of the day with 2:02 on the clock.
The teams were tied 3-3 after a tight first half. After Shenandoah won the opening faceoff, Clark immediately forced a turnover. Daniels later opened the scoring for the Eagles in the third minute of play.
Buss tipped a shot from Shenandoah leading scorer Stephen Latona, and Voorhees hit the post at the other end.
Bridgewater made it 2-0 with 3:35 left in the first quarter. Mann's shot was saved but Voorhees picked up the rebound right in front of the cage and finished it off.
The Hornets tied things up at 2-2 with 9:29 left in the second quarter and then threatened to take the lead on an extended possession. Three shots went wide before Buss came up with a save on Tilghman Sanders.
The Eagles reclaimed a 3-2 lead on Daniels goal, just over six minutes before halftime. LaTona answered to send the teams into the locker rooms knotted at 3-all.
Latona finished with three goals and two assists for the visitors while Sanders dished out a trio of assists.
Bridgewater improves to 6-10, 2-6 and wins multiple ODAC league contests for the first time in its three-year history. The Eagles will conclude the 2015 campaign on Saturday at Hampden-Sydney. Shenandoah falls to 4-11, 0-8.
