Men's Lacrosse Concludes Season with Loss at HSC

Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team wrapped up its 2015 season with a 13-6 loss at Hampden-Sydney on Saturday afternoon.

Bridgewater outscored its opponent over the entire second half, but the Tigers had opened things up with a 5-0 second quarter.

BC held Hampden-Sydney to just one tally in the third quarter, and Thomas Maher struck unassisted with 1:09 left to make it 11-3.

Corey Portell answered a Duncan Morris goal early in the fourth quarter. Jeff Strickland then took a pass from Lucas Clark and scored, with Maher capping the scoring for Bridgewater in the final minute.

Maher scored twice, while Rob Simmons added a goal and an assist. Defensively, Sean Nevin totaled three caused turnovers and four ground balls, while goalie Andrew Buss made 12 saves to go with a team-best six ground balls.

Simmons scored Bridgewater's first goal of the day in the fifth minute of action, and then assisted Derrick Daniels to keep his side within a goal at 3-2 with 8:43 left in the opening period.

HSC pulled away with an 8-0 run, including a second quarter where the hosts outscored the Eagles 5-0.

Thomas Armstrong scored early in the second for a 6-2 lead. Dontae Buck then picked up a three-minute non-releasable penalty for an illegal stick. The Eagles quickly threw the ball away however and Jake Koferl assisted James Hughes for a man-down Tiger goal.

Matthew Arndt's shot was saved and Hampden-Sydney killed off the rest of the penalty. Aaron Kiser then picked up a slashing call for Bridgewater and the Tigers followed with a man-up goal from Abbot Wallenborn.

Armstrong scored the final two goals of the half to stretch Hampden-Sydney's advantage to 10-2 at the break.

Armstrong would score again in the third quarter, his third straight, to complete the eight-goal HSC run.

Maher's goal late in the third finally broke a scoreless Bridgewater run of over 37 minutes.

Hampden-Sydney controlled the game on the faceoff dot, winning 20-of-23 draws and contributing to a 48-27 discrepancy in ground balls. Buck won 11-of-12 faceoffs and Jared Arntzen won 5-of-6, with each player picking up three ground balls.

Armstrong led the Tiger attack with four goals and Hughes had a hat trick.

The sides were pretty even on shots (39-30 HSC), turnovers (17 for Bridgewater, 19 for Hampden-Sydney) and clears (BC 21-23, HSC 21-22), with faceoffs being the glaring difference in the contest.

The Eagles broke every team single season scoring record in 2015, with Simmons adding his 14th assist of the year. Blake Mann did not score but set season marks for goals (29) and points (34).

Bridgewater finishes its 2015 campaign with a record of 6-11, 2-7 ODAC. Hampden-Sydney enters the ODAC playoffs at 9-6, 6-3.
