Box Score 2 BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College closed out its 2014-15 baseball season Saturday afternoon by splitting a doubleheader with Marymount University. The Saints took the opener 9-3, but the Eagles bounced back to win the second game 14-8.
After committing five errors in the opening-game loss, Bridgewater responded with a strong offensive effort to win the nightcap.
Bridgewater snapped an early 1-1 tie in Game 2 with two runs in the second inning. Darren Yoder and Justin Petock walked to open the inning and Brandon Poole chased home Yoder with a single down the left-field line, giving the Eagle a 2-1 lead. Steven Woerner reached when his sacrifice bunt was misplayed for an error, loading the bases with no outs. Derrik Walling then plated Petock with a sacrifice fly to center for a 3-1 Bridgewater lead.
After the Saints tied the score with two runs in the top of the third, the Eagles took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Petock walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on Woerner's one-out single. Both runners scored on Walling's double to right, putting the Eagles on top 5-3.
Marymount added a run in the top of the fifth on Ryan Blake's RBI-single to make it a one-run game, but the Eagles scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to go up 8-4.
Ryan Leake led off the fifth with a single and moved to second on Brendan Howell's sac bunt. Leake scored on a single by Darren Yoder, making the score 6-4. A single by Petock put runners at the corners and a single by Poole scored Yoder to make it 7-4. Petock scored on Woerner's single to right for an 8-4 Eagles lead.
Marymount (17-17) inched closer on Ben Berczek's two-run double in the top of the seventh, but the Eagles put the game away with a six-run outburst in the bottom of the inning to open up a 14-6 lead.
Petock led off with a single to start the seventh and moved to second on Poole's sac bunt. Pinch-runner Cavin Clyde took third on a wild pitch before a walk to Woerner put runners at the corners. Clyde trotted home on Chris King's sac fly, giving BC a 9-6 cushion. Walling and Parker Mead followed with singles to load the sacks and Leake followed with a single up the middle, scoring Woerner to make it 10-6. The Saints then went to the bullpen and Howell greeted reliever Sean O'Connell with a bases-clearing double, pushing the Eagles lead to 13-6. Howell moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on another wild pitch for a 14-6 Bridgewater lead.
Bridgewater finished the second game with 15 hits and six players - Walling, Mead, Leake, Petock, Poole and Woerner - had two hits each. Walling and Howell each contributed three RBIs.
In the opener, the Saints used a seven-run third-inning to take control. Marymount took advantage of two costly errors, a misjudged fly ball in the outfield and two-run singles by Ben Berczek, Brandon Padgett and Jack Breheny to open up a 7-0 lead.
The Saints made it 8-0 with a run in the fourth before the Eagles got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Dylan Horne singled to center, stole second and scored on a single by Walling, making the score 8-1.
Bridgewater added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull within 8-3. Poole led off with a double and scored on Clyde's single. Woerner added a two-out, run-scoring single to right for Bridgewater's final run.
The Eagles managed just six hits in the opener with Walling leading the way with two hits.
Bridgewater closes out its season with a 24-14-1 record. The games were the final contests for Bridgewater seniors Ryan Fitzgerald, Yoder and Walling.
