Second Quarter Burst Leads Eagles Past Ferrum

Box Score

FERRUM, Va. –
A six-goal second quarter helped the Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team to a road victory, 14-10 at Ferrum on Thursday afternoon.

Freshman Sean MacLeish had five goals, including the one that put the Eagles up for good in the second quarter, while adding an assist. Junior Chris Voorhees had three goals and three assists, and Daniel Brown dished out a game-high five assists.

With the Eagles trailing 3-2 heading into the second quarter, Brown fed Voorhees for a goal that continued a 6-0 BC run (started by Thomas Maher with Bridgewater down 3-1 late in the first quarter).

MacLeish then tallied his first of the game to give the Eagles a lead they never squandered. Steven Cosgrove, Blake Mann and Maher (who had a hat trick) followed with three even strength goals in a span of just 83 seconds to give Bridgewater a 7-3 lead.

The hosts would not go easy however. Josh Brent's man-up goal was one of three scored by the Panthers in the final four minutes before halftime- the other two coming from CJ Asmus.

Tyler Poage would then open the third quarter scoring to bring Ferrum back to within a goal at 8-7.

Voorhees had hit the crossbar before Poage's tally, and helped give Bridgewater some breathing room with three third period assists. After finding Mann for a goal, he helped MacLeish's second of the day for a 10-7 lead.

Voorhees also assisted on MacLeish's goal with 23 seconds left in the third, before MacLeish would strike twice more just 31 seconds apart in the final period.

BC goalie Andrew Buss made 14 stops, his ninth consecutive game with double-digit saves dating back to last March.

Nick Strider won 17-of-27 faceoffs, with Sean Nevin (3 CTs) and Curtis Hughes (2 CTs) causing multiple turnovers on the defensive end.

For Ferrum, Asmus had a hat trick and Koby McMahon picked up a game-high six ground balls.

Bridgewater improves to 1-1 and will travel to Southern Virginia on Saturday at 1 p.m. Ferrum, who previously defeated SVU by a goal, falls to 2-2 on the year.
