HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Bridgewater College men's tennis team turned in a strong performance Thursday afternoon to defeat Division II Belmont Abbey, 6-3.
Bridgewater took the early lead by sweeping the three doubles matches.
Freddie Roberts and Nathaniel Horner were first off the court as the Eagles duo defeated Tommy McManus and Mike Nguyen 8-1 to win the match at No. 3 doubles.
Kyle Hartfield and Emmett Johnson teamed up to make it 2-0 by holding off Chip Moore and Ero Okhiria 8-5 to win the No. 2 doubles match.
Thomas Rishcoff and Joe Dillenbeck completed the sweep with an 8-5 win at No. 1 over Belmont Abbey's Tomas Pardo and Chase Eldridge.
Belmont Abbey controlled play at the top of the singles ladder, but the Eagles dominated at the bottom of the ladder to clinch the match.
Roberts picked up the first singles victory, defeating Okhiria 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 4 slot.
Dayton Carpenter clinched the team victory for Bridgewater with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 5 over Moore. Horner won the sixth point for the Eagles with a 6-1, 6-0 verdict over Nguyen at No. 6 singles.
Belmont Abbey won the first three singles flights.
Pardo defeated Hartfield in split sets to win at No. 1. Harfield won the first set in a tiebreaker, but Pardo took the second set 6-2 to even the match. A tiebreaker was then played to determine the winner and Pardo came out on top 10-6.
McManus held off Dillenbeck 6-4, 6-2 to win at No. 2 while Eldridge slipped past Johnson at No. 3, winning both sets in a tiebreaker.
