ASHLAND, Va. - Bridgewater College salvaged a split in Saturday's ODAC doubleheader with No. 9 ranked Randolph-Macon. Randolph-Macon took the opener 8-0, but the Eagles bounced back to win the second game 5-4.
Yellow Jackets' ace James Walsh limited the Eagles to just four hits in eight innings to earn the victory in the first game.
Randolph-Macon (13-2, 2-2 in the ODAC) scored all the runs it would need with four in the bottom of the second inning. Travis Lodge's three-run homer highlighted the outburst.
Nick Maiolo's solo homer in the bottom of the first inning gave the Jackets the early lead in Game 2.
Bridgewater (11-7, 2-2 in the ODAC) got on the board with a run in the second to tie the score. With two outs, Garrison Wright kept the inning alive with a single. Josh Lasam followed with a single and a throwing error on the play allowed Wright to score, tying the score at 1-1.
A run-scoring single by Stuart Brown in the bottom half of the second put the Jackets back on top, but Bridgewater scored twice in the top of the fourth to take the lead for good.
Chris King and Wright opened the fourth with singles and both moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Lasam. With two outs, Cavin Clyde delivered a clutch base hit to score both runners, giving the Eagles a 3-2 lead.
Bridgewater padded its lead with two more runs in the fifth. Kenner Berry and Brendan Howell led off the innng with back-to-back singles and a sacrifice bunt by Damian Reed put runners at second and third. King followed with a two-run single for a 5-2 Eagles lead.
Randolph-Macon battled back with single runs in the seventh and eighth to make it a one-run game. Jay Patti led off the seventh with a triple and scored on a groundout by Christian Sanderson to pull the hosts to within 5-3.
The Yellow Jackets nicked Eagles closer Steven Woerner for one run in the eighth to make it 5-4. Cole Migliorini led off with a double and later scored on a single up the middle by Brown to make it a one-run ballgame.
The Eagles threatened in the ninth when Berry led off with a double and moved to third on a sac bunt by Howell. Berry was stranded at third, leaving the Eagles with a 5-4 lead.
Woerner closed the matter in the bottom of the ninth when he retired the side in order to earn his third save of the season.
The Eagles pounded out 15 hits in the second game with King and Clyde leading the way with three hits each. Berry, Howell and Wright each contributed two base hits.
Starting pitcher Justin Petock picked up the win to improve to 3-1 on the season. Petock worked 6.2 innings and allowed three runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked two.
The Eagles return home Wednesday afternoon to host rival Eastern Mennonite. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
