BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College men's tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision to Washington and Lee, the 20th-ranked team in Division III, Wednesday afternoon on Mapp Courts.
After the Generals took points at the top two doubles flights, the Eagles got on the board with a victory at No. 3 doubles. Bridgewater freshmen Freddie Roberts and Nathaniel Horner held off Michael Lukas and Justin Gillette 8-6 to take the victory. The Eagles duo led 7-4 before the Generals won two straight games. Horner then held serve to close out the match.
At No. 1 doubles, W&L's Thomas Johnson and Will Bannister stopped Joe Dillenbeck and Thomas Rishcoff 8-2 for the Generals first point. Zack Ely and Joe Siami turned back BC's Kyle Hartfield and Emmett Johnson 8-3 to win at No. 2.
Bridgewater won two singles matches and took a third match to three sets.
Rishcoff rolled to victory at No. 2 singles, defeating Siami 6-0, 6-3. Horner claimed the Eagles' other singles victory with a split set decison at No. 6 singles. Horner blanked Lukas 6-0 in the opening set but his Generals foe rallied for a 7-5 win in the second set to even the match. A tiebreaker was played to determine the winner with Horner coming out on top 10-7.
W&L's Johnson and Bridgewater's Hartfield battled in a close match at the Nlo. 1 singles slot. Johnson took the upper hand, winning the first set 6-3. Hartfield jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set and held on for a 6-4 win to even the match. Johnson won the match by winning the tiebreaker 10-5.
The Generals won another close match at No. 3 where Bannister defeated Dillenbeck 6-4, 6-4.
At No. 4 singles, Ely stopped Johnson 6-0, 6-3 and Gillette downed Roberts 6-3, 6-2 to win at No. 5.
Bridgewater is back on the courts Tuesday when the Eagles host Roanoke College.
