Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Christopher Newport snapped a scoreless tie with five runs in the top of the fourth inning and the 14th-ranked Captains went on to defeat Bridgewater College, 7-0, Thursday in non-conference baseball action.

Bridgewater starter Ian Mayes did not allow a hit in the first three innings, but the Eagles' righthander ran into trouble in the top of the fourth.

A.J. Nicely led off the fourth with an infield single and Tommy Vitaletti was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved up on a passed ball and both scored on a single up the middle by Brandon Ginch, making the score 2-0.

Keith Roberts bunted for a single and Connor Henderson followed with a ground-rule double down the left-field line, scoring Ginch to make it 3-0. With runners at second and third, Kyle Corwin singled to left, plating both runners for a 5-0 CNU lead.

That was more than enough support for CNU's Michael Thomas as the lefty went the distance on a three-hitter. Thomas struck out seven and did not walk a batter.

Junior outfielder Kenner Berry had two of Bridgewater's three base hits.

The Eagles, now 13-9, return to conference play Friday when they travel to play Emory & Henry.
