HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Bridgewater College men's tennis team lost the opener during its spring break trip, falling to Wilkes University, 7-2.
Wilkes led 3-0 after doubles play, winning three tight matches from the Eagles.
At No. 1 doubles, Courtney Murphy and Adam Lefkandinos slipped past Bridgewater's Thomas Rishcoff and Joe Dillenbeck 9-7. The Eagles duo of Kyle Hartfield and Emmett Johnson lost at No. 2 doubles to Max Appello and Michael Kranz 8-4. Wilkes' Troy Haas and Andrew Neidig edged Freddie Roberts and Nathaniel Horner at the No. 3 slot by a score of 8-6.
Bridgewater picked up singles wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 flights.
At No. 1, Hartfield took a close match from Murphy in straight sets 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. Dillenbeck won in split sets at No. 3 with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Lefkandinos.
Bridgewater's Rishcoff split the first two sets against Wilkes' Appello. Appello won the first 6-4 while Rishcoff took the second set by the same score. Rishcoff retired in the third set with Appello holding a 1-0 lead.
Wilkes took the remaining three matches in straight sets.
At No. 4 singles, Kranz defeated Johnson 6-0, 6-2 while Haas defeated Roberts 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5. Artyom Nabokin stopped Horner 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
