Eagles Hold Off Quakers For Fifth Straight Win

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College fought off the Guilford College Quakers 6-3 Friday afternoon in a close ODAC men's tennis match played on Mapp Courts. The victory was the fifth straight in conference play for the Eagles.

Doubles play was close in all three matches with the Eagles taking wins at No. 1 and No. 2.

Thomas Rishcoff and Emmett Johnson put the Eagles on the board first with an 8-4 victory over Chasen Chacon and Graham Pearson at No. 2 doubles.

Bridgewater's No. 1 doubles team - Kyle Hartfield and Joe Dillenbeck - made it 2-0 with an 8-6 victory over the Quakers' Erik Meiler and Aaron Smedley.

Guilford salvaged a point when Levi Bruff and Mesa Martorell held off Freddie Roberts and Nathaniel Horner 8-5 to win at No. 3 doubles.

In the first singles match off the court, Dillenbeck took a straight set win at No. 3 singles over Mason Church 6-3, 6-4.

Hartfield added another point for the Eagles with a tough three-set victory over Meiler at No. 1 singles. Hartfield took the first set 6-2, but Meiler evened the match by winning the second set by the same score. Hartfield prevailed in the deciding third set 6-3.

Guilford stayed alive when Smedley won in split sets over Johnson at No. 4. Smedley took a close 6-4 decision in the first set, but Johnson rolled in the second set, 6-0, to even the score. Smedley rebounded with a 6-1 verdict in the third set to win the match,

Rishcoff earned the clinching point with a hard-fought split-set decision over Martorell at No. 2 singles. Rishcoff outlasted Martorell in the first set 7-6, but his Quaker opponent evened the score by taking the second set 6-4. Rishcoff clained the victory, winning the third set 6-1.

The teams split the final two matches. Bruff swept past Roberts at No. 5 singles 6-3, 6-0 while Horner downed Pearson 6-4 to win at No. 6.
