HARRISONBURG, Va. - Ryan Leake hurled seven shutout innings and the Bridgewater offense produced 22 hits Tuesday afternoon to roll past Eastern Mennonite 12-4 in ODAC baseball action.
Leake turned in his third consecutive stellar start, allowing no runs on seven hits in his seven innings. He struck out seven and walked just two as he improved to 4-2 on the season. In his past three starts, all conference wins, Leake has allowed two earned runs on 16 hits in 22 innings for a 0.81 ERA.
Six different Eagles finished the day with three hits to their credit. Chris King led the way, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Austin Batten was 3-for-4 out of the leadoff spot while Cavin Clyde, Brendan Howell, Garrison Wright and Dylan Horne each finished the game 3-for-5.
Bridgewater (18-12, 9-5 in the ODAC) scored three runs in the top of the first and never looked back. Batten led off the game with a single through the right side and moved to third on Clyde's opposite-field double. King chased home both runners with a double to left, making the score 2-0. With two outs, Howell singled to right, scoring King for a 3-0 Eagles lead.
The Eagles added single runs in the second, fourth and sixth innings to increase their lead to 6-0.
With one out in the second, Horne singled, stole second and continued to third when the throw from the catcher skipped into centerfield. With two outs, Clyde walked to keep the inning alive and King followed with a run-scoring single up the middle, giving the Eagles a 4-0 lead.
Bridgewater scored a run in the fourth on a double-play ball before adding a run in the sixth. Wright led off the sixth with an infield single and stole second. He moved to third on a groundout and scored on a single by Batten, increasing the BC lead to 6-0.
The Eagles blew the game open with a six-run outburst in the seventh inning. With one out, Howell got things started with a ground-rule double. Howell moved to third on a single by Wright and scored on a single by Leake, making the score 7-0. A double by Horne scored Wright for an 8-0 lead and put runners at second and third. Batten walked to load the bases before Clyde drove in a pair of runs with a single to right to push the lead to 10-0. Batten scored on a sacrifice fly by King and Clyde crossed the plate on a run-scoring single by Kenner Berry, giving the Eagles a 12-0 lead.
Eastern Mennonite (12-14, 4-9 in the ODAC) scored four runs against the Eagles' bullpen in the final two innings for the final 12-4 score.
Bridgewater returns to action Saturday when the Eagles travel to Hampden-Sydney College for an key ODAC doubleheader.
