Guilford Takes Crucial ODAC Battle with Eagles, 7-5

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Another fourth quarter Bridgewater rally fell short this time, as the Eagles' men's lacrosse team dropped a crucial ODAC encounter 7-5 to Guilford on Saturday at Jopson Field.

The teams, who now sport matching 6-6 records, are battling for the final playoff spots in the ODAC. Guilford moved to 2-3 in the conference, while Bridgewater fell to 1-4.

After erasing three-goal deficits in a win over Virginia Wesleyan and an overtime loss to Randolph-Macon, the Eagles nearly did it for the third time in four games by scoring three straight in the final period to pull within one.

Derrick Daniels, who moved to 98 career points in his quest to become the first player in program history to reach the century mark, assisted Blake Mann on Bridgewater's first possession of the fourth quarter to make it 6-3 Guilford.

After a Daniel Brown goal, Guilford's Alex Brownlee hit the post and the Eagles answered at the other end, with Daniels assisting Mann again to make it 6-5.

Bridgewater would go on the attack with a chance to tie, but the Quakers' Adam Fiore later struck at the other end to give the visitors breathing room.

Bridgewater was kept at bay early by Guilford goalie Parker Styles (13 saves), who made five first quarter stops without allowing a goal.

Styles made a good save to deny Brown on BC's first possession of the contest, with Andrew McDonagh hitting the crossbar at the other end. Later in the quarter Thomas Maher found Brown at the back post, but Styles made a big save. He then went low to deny Daniels as well.

Bridgewater had the first man-up opportunity early in the second quarter but couldn't convert, and Guilford went the other way in transition to take a 4-0 lead through Fiore.

Steven Cosgrove got Bridgewater on the board in the second period, and Chris Voorhees converted a Maher pass in the third quarter to make it 5-2 Quakers.

Senior Andrew Buss finished with 13 saves and four ground balls for the Eagles, while classmate Lucas Clark forced two turnovers.

Fiore tallied a hat trick for the visitors. Connor Manning won 8-of-14 faceoffs and picked up a game-high five ground balls.

Bridgewater will wrap up a four-game homestand and look to get on track in conference play, next Saturday vs. Randolph.
