Eagles Pull Away in Season Opener

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. –
The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team went on a 7-1 run in the middle of the contest, taking their season opener at home 15-7 vs. Ferrum.

Freshman Ryan McHugh and junior Blake Mann had three goals and an assist each to lead Bridgewater, while senior Chris Voorhees also had a hat trick. Sophomore Taylor Phipps dished out three assists.

Two other newcomers, Hunter Callan and Justin Calabrese, scored twice each and senior Matthew Arndt added a goal and two assists.

Freshman Austin Aguilar won 16-of-24 faceoffs in his debut and picked up nine ground balls. Mann and Callan caused two turnovers each, and goalie Kevin Metzger recorded eight saves.

Bridgewater surged ahead in the second period with three goals in just over three minutes to take a 5-2 lead. Calabrese put BC back in front after Callan had forced a turnover on the Ferrum clear.

Arndt then scored from way outside, and assisted Mann with 3:43 left in the second quarter after Austin had won the faceoff.

Bridgewater took a 7-3 lead into the locker room after Arndt assisted Voorhees with just five seconds remaining on the clock.

McHugh converted from a tight angle in the opening minute of the third quarter, and Mann scored a fancy over the shoulder flip to make it 9-3 Bridgewater.

Callan then ripped a shot off the post, one of two pipes he would hit in the second half. After Ferrum inched to within five with two unanswered goals, Mann put some more separation with another tricky shot later in the third.

The first quarter was full of penalties, five on the Eagles and three on Ferrum. Bridgewater survived an early penalty kill without a shot on goal, and struck first when Callan snuck a shot through the opposing goalie.

After the Eagles killed a one-minute penalty, Voorhees scored on a high rip from Phipps' assist.

Following two more BC flags in quick succession, Ferrum finally got a man-up goal as Tyler Fullem picked up a deflected pass and scored.

Early in the second quarter, Ryan Tesler one-touched a Fullem pass into the cage to even things up at 2-2. Fullem tried the same thing seconds later but Metzger spun around quickly to make a good reaction save on CJ Ausmus.

Bridgewater (1-0) will travel to Marymount on Saturday.
