Eagles Fall to #17 Lynchburg in ODAC Opener

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team opened ODAC play on Saturday with a 21-4 loss to #17 Lynchburg.

Kevin Metzger made 16 saves in the cage for the Eagles, with Michael Fairley replacing him late and stopping all four shots he faced.

Jake Truman caused four turnovers and picked up five ground balls, with fellow defenseman Nick Sherman forcing two turnovers and totaling four ground balls.

The Bridgewater defense made several nice plays in a tight first quarter, with Lynchburg converting on both of their extra man opportunities and scoring a backbreaking goal with two seconds remaining to take a 4-1 lead.

Turnovers were the big issue for the Eagles in an otherwise evenly fought opening period, as BC failed on 5-of-7 clears and turned it over on both of their offensive possessions over the first 10 minutes.

The Eagles got on the board following their first man-up opportunity, with Ryan McHugh assisting Sean MacLeish just seconds after the penalty had cleared to cut the deficit to 3-1.

The teams combined for four goals between the 12 and 10 minute marks of the second quarter, the first three by the Hornets to open up a 7-1 gap. Chris Voorhees answered quickly for Bridgewater.

Shayne O'Brien scored and drew a crosscheck to make it 8-2 late in the second. Bridgewater killed off the penalty and had possession, but was called for an illegal pick and then flagged for offsides in the final minute. Lynchburg scored right as the penalty had cleared for a 9-2 halftime lead.

Truman picked up a third quarter ground ball, cut past a defender and thought about shooting with the long pole before assisting Voorhees for the goal. Blake Mann scored BC's fourth with six seconds remaining in the contest.

Harrison Brennan totaled five goals and two assists to lead Lynchburg.

Bridgewater is 3-3, 0-1 ODAC and will travel to Greensboro on Wednesday. #17 Lynchburg improves to 3-2, 1-0, with both losses coming vs. top-10 ranked teams.
