Generals Slip Past Eagles, 7-6

LEXINGTON, Va. - Bridgewater rallied from a 6-1 deficit to tie the score with five runs in the top of the fifth, but Washington and Lee pushed across the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth to hand the Eagles a 7-6 setback Wednesday at Dick Smith Field.

The Eagles took the lead with a run in the top of the first. Austin Batten drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a bloop single to left by Chris King. Brett Jones' single through the left side of the infield scored Batten for a 1-0 lead.

The lead didn't last long as the Generals scored three times in the bottom half of the first to go up 3-1. Two more runs in the third and one in the fourth pushed the W&L advantage to-6-1.

The Eagles stormed back with five runs in the fifth to tie the game.

With one out, Matthew LaPrade was safe on a throwing error and Brandon Poole followed with a triple down the right-field line to slice the deficit to 6-2. Poole scored on a double to right by Batten to draw the Eagles closer at 6-3. With two outs and two runners on, Jake Bailey lined a sngle to left-center, making the score 6-4. Another Generals' throwing error allowed another run to cross the plate and an infield single by JT Creed scored Bailey to tie the contest at 6-6.

The Generals regained the lead with three consecutive hits in the bottom of the sixth inning.

With one out Austin Crane singled to left and he moved to third on a single to right by Kyle Ruedisilli. Crane scored on a single to the hole at short by Matt Wasson, putting W&L back on top, 7-6.

Bridgewater loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but failed to score.

King beat out an infield single and moved to second on a single by Bailey. Jacob Talley walked to load the bases, but the Generals escaped the inning with the lead when Creed grounded into a 1-2-3 double play.

King, Jones and Bailey each had two hits to lead the Eagles' offense.

Freshman infielder Talley lined a single to left in the fourth inning to run his hitting streak to 17 straight games.

The loss dealt a blow to the Eagles' playoff hopes as they are now 6-11 in conference play and 11-23 overall. Washington and Lee maintained its grip on first-place in the ODAC as the Generals improved to 13-2 in the conference and 22-10 overall.

The Eagles are scheduled to travel to Guilford on Saturday for a key conference doubleheader.
