NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team opened up the 2018 campaign with a 14-13 overtime upset at Christopher Newport.
Junior Anna O'Hara finished off a pass from classmate Kristen Stark with just over four minutes left in regulation, forcing the extra period.
CNU won the draw in overtime but BC freshman Jenna Corvin forced a turnover and secured the ground ball. O'Hara drove right to the cage for the game winner.
O'Hara finished with a game-high five goals along with three ground balls. Dwyer Neal scored four times, while Kristen Stark totaled two goals and three assists.
Another junior, Sarah Yashinskie, filled the box scored with a hat trick, four ground balls, four draw controls and four caused turnovers. Mackenzie Parcell also forced four turnovers.
Rookie goalie Mikaela Brooks had an outstanding debut, stopping 14 shots including nine second half saves.
Stark tied the game at 11-11 and Yashinskie gave Bridgewater a 12-11 lead in the second half.
After CNU retook the lead with 15:53 remaining by scoring twice in 34 seconds, the teams combined to go scoreless for almost 12 minutes.
Brooks stopped two free position shots from Catherine Leighty in that stretch, recorded two other saves, and saw CNU's Catie Chess hit the post. After O'Hara tied the game at 13-all, Brooks made another key save on Colleen Bourgal.
Trailing 5-2 early, Bridgewater surged into the lead with five unanswered goals. Neal scored twice, followed by three goals by O'Hara in a span of exactly three minutes.
The Captains have been nationally ranked as recently as two years ago. Bridgewater (1-0) will play next at Salem on March 3.
