Eagles Pick Up Road Victory At W&L

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. - Bridgewater College took the lead with four runs in the fourth inning Tuesday afternoon and the Eagles went on to defeat Washington and Lee, 10-3, in ODAC baseball action.

The Generals scored first with a run in the bottom of the third inning, but the Eagles took the lead for good in the top of the fourth. Jacob Talley was safe and continued to second on an error to start the inning. Chris King then reached on a throwing error with Talley scoring on the play to tie the score at 1-1. Luke Paczewski walked to put runners at first and second and then both King and Paczewski moved up a base on a passed ball. King scored on a single by Brett Jones to put the Eagles on top 2-1. Cameron Stanley followed Jones' hit with a two-run double, giving the Eagles a 4-1 advantage.

Bridgewater added another run in the sixth when Austin Batten walked and scored on Stanley's double to the wall in left-center, making the score 5-1.

The Eagles put the game away with a four-run outburst in the seventh. With one out, Jacob Grabeel and Talley reached on consecutive singles. Grabeel scored on a base hit up the middle by King to push the lead to 6-1. Paczewski then singled to center, scoring Talley, to make it 7-1. King scored on a single to center by Batten and Paczewski scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Jones, putting the Eagles comfortably ahead, 9-1.

The offensive support was more than enough for senior lefty Jordan Showalter as he cruised through seven innings to pick up the win. Showalter allowed just one run on six hits while striking out three batters and walking just two.

Grabeel led Bridgewater's 14-hit attack with a 3-for-5 day at the plate from the leadoff spot. Stanley and Talley each had two hits with Stanley driving in three runs. Every batter in the starting lineup had at least one hit.

With the victory, Bridgewater improved to 13-8-1 overall and 3-5 in the ODAC.

Schedule Update: Wednesday's non-conference home game against Averett has been cancelled. The Eagles will be back in action Saturday when they host Virginia Wesleyan in an ODAC doubleheader. The first game is set to begin at noon.
