Men's Lacrosse Clinches First Playoff Berth

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team clinched the first ODAC playoff berth in program history, beating Randolph 23-6 on Saturday evening at the Jopson Athletic Complex.

Daniel Brown had four goals and four assists on his Senior Day, with classmate Blake Mann adding four goals and an assist. Vincent Foti had a hat trick, while Sean MacLeish added two goals and three assists.

BC got contributions from their young players as well, with freshman Mason Gauntt winning 17-of-19 faceoffs and setting a new school single game record with 13 ground balls. Freshman Brandon Schick had three caused turnovers while another rookie, Kyle Ortiz, finished with two goals, one assist and two ground balls.

Brown opened the scoring with a drive from the right side. He then took it from the right again and found MacLeish with a nice feed to make it 2-0. Jake Pangle followed with another goal for the Eagles.

Gauntt had won the ground ball on the game's opening three faceoffs, leading to those three BC goals.

Randolph's Prince Charles won the next faceoff and scored on the possession to get the WildCats on the board. He struck again to make it 3-2, with Kadri Hearns assisting both plays.

Gauntt won the next faceoff and ground ball, leading to an Eric Husselbaugh goal that restored a two-point BC advantage. Foti then scored on a strange play, as his shot rebounded off the post, off the shoulder of a defender, and bounced back just over the goalline before spinning back out.

Mann scored in the final seconds of the first quarter to make it 8-4 on a play where the Eagles drew two slashing penalties. That resulted in the rare occasion where just one WildCat was in midfield for the faceoff, with Randolph sending in a longpole and the Eagles holding it for the start of the second period.

Taylor Phipps struck on that 6-on-4, from Brown, to make it 9-4. Brown's fourth assist of the opening half was also to Phipps- the pass was nearly picked off but Phipps pulled it away from the rushing WildCat and scored from way outside for a 12-5 lead.

Foti completed his hat trick in the second quarter, with two flags on the field again. Mann recorded a hat trick on the man-up opportunity 13 seconds later, and BC took a 15-5 lead into the break.

It was Senior Day for nine players- Brown, Mann, Kevin Metzger, Scott Tucker, Benjamin Vayer, Corey Portell, Alexander Bredenburg, Edward Martin III and James Georgoff. BC took advantage of the occasion to get both Martin and Georgoff, two key defensive middies over the past four years, their first career goals. Bredenburg made three saves in the cage while allowing just one goal.

Bridgewater (9-7, 3-6 ODAC) had to sweat out another result on Saturday, as the Eagles needed Randolph-Macon to defeat Guilford. RMC, who knocked Bridgewater out of the postseason last year by failing to protect a late lead against Shenandoah, took a big first quarter advantage and prevented much drama with a comfortable 15-9 win.

The Eagles will travel to Roanoke (12-4, 7-2) for Tuesday's quarterfinal, with the winner set to face second-seeded Hampden-Sydney.
