Eagles Hold Off Wilkes, 12-8

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team scored three straight goals in the third quarter and held off Wilkes 12-8 on Tuesday.

Wilkes scored a pair of man-up goals early in the third quarter as part of a 4-1 run for the Colonels that made it a one-goal game at 6-5 BC.

Hunter Callan made it 7-5 and then Chris Martel scored on the counter for an 8-5 lead. Martel scored again on a great feed from Taylor Phipps, and nearly had his third in a span of under three minutes but was whistled for a crease violation.

Jake Truman (six caused turnovers, seven ground balls) and Grayson Rech (four caused turnovers, four ground balls) each had huge games on defense for the Eagles.

Martel recorded three goals and two assists, while Eric Husselbaugh totaled five goals and one helper.

There was also a good battle in the cage between Bridgewater's Hunter Bagby (12 saves, 8 goals allowed) and Wilkes' Carter Whittemore (19 saves, 12 goals allowed).

Husselbaugh scored Bridgewater's first four goals of the game to make it 4-1 in the opening quarter. After opening the game with a rip from outside, he finished off a Martel pass to make it 2-0.

Husselbaugh then scored two straight unassisted, and could have had an assist when Whittemore made a great save- one his seven first quarter stops- on Lucas Johnson.

The Colonels made a run in the second quarter, with two goals inside from John Wink- who finished with five goals and six points on the day.

Wink made a crease move from behind the cage and scored from a tight angle to make it 5-2 BC, and then posted up to cut the deficit to two goals.

In between, Bagby absolutely robbed Nico Lorenzo off of a Wink pass, going down low and then getting his stick up high to deny the Colonels. Martel scored late in the second to give the Eagles a 6-3 advantage at halftime.

The Eagles improve to 4-0 and will host #17 Lynchburg on Saturday in their ODAC opener.
