RALEIGH, N.C. - The Bridgewater College men's tennis team opened its spring season with a convincing 8-1 victory Sunday afternoon at William Peace University.
The Eagles swept the doubles action, losing a total of just three games, to take a 3-0 lead.
Canon Secord and Matthew Gordon took an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles while Sonet Gandhi and Nick Kiser won 8-1 at the No. 2 slot. Leyton Pullin and Robert Williard completed the sweep with an 8-0 victory at No. 3.
William Peace picked up its lone point at No. 1 singles where Dylan Betancourt edged Bridgewater's Secord in split sets. Secord won the first set 6-2, but lost by a close 6-4 margin in the second set. A tiebreaker was played to determine the winner with Betancourt prevailing 10-6.
Bridgewater won the five remaining singles matches in straight sets.
Gordon picked up the win at No. 2, defeating Joe Stephens 6-4, 6-1. Gandhi downed Daniel Hilalgo 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 while Kiser stopped Dallas Russell 6-2, 6-2 to take the point at No. 4.
Pullin at No. 5 and Willard at No. 6 each won his match by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores.
