BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater baseball team finished the weekend with a 4-0 record after Sunday's doubleheader sweep of DeSales University, the Eagles' second sweep in as many days.
The Eagles topped the Bulldogs 8-5 in Sunday's opener and won the second game, 7-4. Bridgewater rallied from big deficits in each game to take a victory. In the first game, the Eagles scored two runs in the fifth inning and six runs in the sixth to erase a 5-0 DeSales lead. In the second game, DeSales scored four runs in the top of the first inning, but the Eagles' pitching staff put zeroes on the scoreboard the rest of the way as the home team fought back for the 7-4 victory.
Bridgewater is now 6-1 to start the 2020 season.
In Game 1, Sean Hanczaryk put the visitors on the board with a two-out, run-scoring single in the top of the first and Sergio Diaz made it 3-0 with a two-run dinger in the third. The Bulldogs added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to lead 5-0.
Bridgewater finally got to starter Ian Kacergis with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Jarret Biesecker singled and Jacob Talley was hit by a pitch. After Kevin Navedo hit a fly ball to center for the second out, Luke Paczewski chased both runners home with a double, cutting the DeSales' lead to 5-2.
The Eagles overtook the Bulldogs with a six-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth. Bridgewater loaded the bases with no outs on a walk to Jacob Grabeel, a single by Tanner Montgomery and a bunt single by Brett Lysohir. Biesecker lined a single to center, scoring one run, and, with the bases still full, Talley belted a two-run double to the fence in left field, tying the score at 5-5. Navedo walked to reload the bases before Paczewski cleared the sacks with a three-run double giving the Eagles an 8-5 lead.
DeSales loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but Bridgewater reliever Brett Tharp got Billy Scanlon to ground into a 6-4-3 double play for the final outs of the first game.
Montgomery was 3-for-3 at the plate and Paczewski finished with five RBIs. Ryan Mason pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win and Tharp recorded the final two outs to earn his first save of the season.
In Sunday's second game, the Bulldogs jumped on Bridgewater's freshman starter Hunter Clever for four runs in the top of the first, but the Eagles responded with three runs in the bottom half of the first inning. With one out in the bottom of the first, Talley singled and moved to third on a double by Navedo. Paczewski followed with a two-run double to put the Eagles on the board. JT Creed chased Paczewski home with single, pulling the Eagles to within one run, 4-3.
Clever settled down after the rocky first to pitch three scoreless innings and the Eagles gave Clever the lead with a three-run third inning. Paczewski walked to lead off the third and moved to second on a wild pitch. Creed reached on a throwing error with Paczewski scoring on the play to tie the score. Lysohir then belted a triple to the gap in left-center, scoring Creed to put the Eagles on top 5-4. Freshman Jeffrey Snider scored Lysohir with a single, making the score 6-4.
Bridgewater added an insurance run in the sixth on a run-scoring double by Talley, giving the hosts a 7-4 advantage.
Robbie Stoss worked one shutout inning in relief of Clever and Tharpe worked the final two frames to record his second save of the day.
Talley was 2-for-4 in Game 2 and Paczewksi added two more RBIs.
Bridgewater will be back in action on Saturday when the Eagles host Penn State-Altoona in a non-conference twinbill.
