SALEM, Va. - Roanoke College swept doubles play to grab the early lead Tuesday afternoon and the Maroons held off Bridgewater College in singles action to claim a 6-3 victory. Due the ODAC's unbalanced scheduling, Monday's contest was not a conference match.
Roanoke grabbed an early lead when Hunter Adams and Michael Morrell turned back Bridgewater's Robert Williard and Leyton Pullin, 8-5, to take the point at No. 3 doubles. Thomas Hodges and Grayson White added the point at No. 2 doubles with an 8-2 victory over BC's Sonet Gandhi and Nick Kiser. The Maroons added an important point at No. 1 doubles where Jack Fishwick and Jack Doriss outlasted the Eagles' Canon Secord and Matthew Gordon 8-7. The Roanoke duo won the tiebreaker 7-4.
The two teams split the singles matches. Morell and Doriss won their matches to clinch the team win. Morrell stopped Williard 6-0, 6-3 to win at No. 5 singles and Doriss defeated Gandhi 6-3, 6-3 to win at the No. 3 slot. Roanoke picked up its final point when White edged Gordon 6-3, 6-4 to take the point at No. 2.
Secord rolled past Fishwick 6-2, 6-1 to win at the No. 1 position. Kiser outlasted Hodges in split sets to win at No. 4. Kiser won the first set 6-2, but Hodges took the second set 6-1 to even the match. A tiebreaker was played to determine the winner with Kiser edging his opponent 12-10. Pullin took the point at No. 6, stopping Carter Otis 6-3, 6-2.
