BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College men's tennis team dropped a close 6-3 match Sunday afternoon on Mapp Courts to Randolph-Macon.
Doubles play turned out to be a key factor in the outcome of the match as the Yellow Jackets took a 2-1 lead after claiming tight wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots.
The Eagles picked up the first point of the day when Canon Secord and Matthew Gordon downed Alex Hein and Inigo Suescun 8-3 at No. 1 doubles.
Macon evened the match when Max Doyle and Dan Recarte silpped past Leyton Pullin and Bryce Cline 8-6 to win the point at No. 3. Max Hammock and Ryan Aud gave the Yellow Jackets the lead when the duo edged Nick Kiser and Gabe Elder in a tiebreaker 8-7.
In singles action, Secord evened the team score at 2-2 with a straight set 6-0, 6-1 win over Hammock. The Eagles lost another close match at No. 3 singles where Hein edged Kiser 7-6, 7-6. Recarte took the point at No. 5 over Pullin 6-1, 6-0 and Suescun added the clinching point at No. 2 as he held off Gordon 6-3, 7-5.
Max Presley downed Cline 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 for Macon's final point while Elder scored the Eagles' final point with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Aud at No. 4 singles.
The Eagles are back in action Tuesday when they travel to the University of Lynchburg.
