Box Score
BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 10-0 halftime lead in defeating Virginia Wesleyan 14-6 on Wednesday.
Kaity Petersheim totaled five goals, three assists, two ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers. Fellow rookie Lauren Roberts also filled the box score with three goals, an assist, eight draw controls, three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Eagle freshmen scored the first four goals of the game, in a span of just over three minutes.
Petersheim opened the scoring off a BC transition, and Brooke Hanson (two goals, one assist) added one 41 seconds later. Hanson then assisted Petersheim to make it 3-0, and Ashley Venit snuck a shot just over the line for a 4-0 scoreline.
Midway through the half, Allison Burris scored right before the shot clock struck zero to make it 6-0 Eagles.
Mikaela Brooks made a good low save on Kayla Gush's eight-meter shot, and then a stop up high on Natalie Dunn. She would finish with eight stops in the cage for Bridgewater.
Petersheim assisted Roberts twice in 43 seconds late in the first half, the first off a well-executed offensive set and the second off a failed clear with Petersheim chasing down the ground ball and going on the attack.
The Eagles had some near misses in the second half. Roberts won the opening draw and drove right to the cage, ringing a shot off the crossbar.
Later, Jodie Welsh passed to a wide-open Petersheim at the back post on a free position, but Virginia Wesleyan goalie Jordan Moilanen made a great save.
The Marlins went on a 4-0 run to cut the deficit to 10-4 before the Eagles pulled away. Petersheim's fifth of the day made it 12-4 with 12:20 to go.
Bridgewater improves to 3-5, 3-3 ODAC and will host Ferrum on Saturday in an ODAC matchup.
