Eagles Hold On To Defeat Ferrum, 13-10

Box Score

FERRUM, Va. - An eight-run outburst in the sixth inning gave the Bridgewater baseball team a 13-5 lead Thursday night and the Eagles worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Ferrum, 13-10, in ODAC action.

The Eagles scored a run in the first inning and two more in the second to take an early 3-0 lead. Brett Tharp singled with one out in the first and later stole second to move into scoring position. Tharp raced home on Kevin Navedo's double for a 1-0 Bridgewater lead. In the second, Jarret Biesecker drove in two runs with a two-out single, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead.

The teams then traded a pair of runs in the third inning. Jeffrey Snider led off the top of third inning with a bunt single and moved to third on Navedo's single. Snider scored on Jonathan Sexton's sacrifice fly, making the score 4-0. Navedo took second on a passed ball and moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a single by Brandan Hartman, increasing the lead to 5-0.

After scoring two runs in the bottom of the third inning, Ferrum added two more in the fourth to make it a one-run game, 5-4.

Bridgewater then regained control of the contest with eight runs in the sixth. The Eagles loaded the bases and walks to Tharp and Snider plated runs to put the Eagles ahead 7-4. Navedo followed with a two-run single, pushing the lead to 9-4. Sexton then chased Snider home with a double for a 10-4 Eagles' advantage. Hartman was intentionally walked to reload the sacks and a wild pitch allowed Navedo to score for an 11-4 BC lead. Timothy Hopson's groundout plated Sexton and Hartman scored on another wild pitch as the margin ballooned to 13-5.

Ferrum chipped away at the deficit against the Eagles' bullpen and closed to within 13-10 going into the bottom of the ninth. With two outs and no one on base in the ninth, the Panthers loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a single by pinch-hitter Grayson Reed. With the potential winning run at the plate, Eagles' reliever Tucker Hrasky struck out Grayson Chitwood to end the game and preserve the 13-10 victory.

Navedo was 3-for-5 with three RBIs to lead the Eagles' offense. It was Navedo's second straight game this week with three runs batted in. Hartman and Jacob Grabeel added two hits each.

Hrasky worked the final 1.2 innings to close out the game. He allowed one hit while striking out four and walking two.

With the win, the Eagles climbed back to the .500 mark with an 8-8 overall record and a 7-7 mark in ODAC play. Bridgewater is back in action Saturday when the Eagles travel to Greensboro, N.C., to face the Guilford Quakers in a conference doubleheader.
