BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team put up big numbers all over the field in a 19-1 Senior Day win over Ferrum.
Eric Husselbaugh (five goals, two assists) became the first Bridgewater player to hit 200 career points, and fellow senior Justin Calabrese (five goals, one assist) joined the 100-point club.
Goalie Robbie Noyes made 10 saves with just one goal allowed, and Mason Gauntt won all 19 of his faceoff attempts. Grayson Rech led the defense with four caused turnovers and six ground balls.
Transition chances marked the early going. Husselbaugh assisted Hunter Becker in transition, and Noyes made a nice save on Ferrum's Jonathan Straka on a counter the other way. Joshua Huffman then had a long pole chance saved after breaking down the field, in a first half where Panther goalie Patrick Martinek (28 total saves) made numerous impressive stops.
Martinek made a great save on Colby Smith, but Smith took it right back from him at the edge of the crease and scored to make it 3-0 Eagles. Husselbaugh's 200th point came on an assist to Kyle Graham for a 4-0 lead.
Calabrese's high rip made it 5-0 in the second quarter, and Joshua Anderson had a nice feed to a wide-open Husselbaugh for BC's sixth of the day.
Calabrese then ripped a shot off the crossbar, but would record his 99th career point with a goal that made it 8-0 later in the second period. He opened the second half scoring with a hat trick and his 100th point.
Trevor McClelland forced a turnover on a third quarter clear and had a breakaway chance- Martinek made another point-blank save but Husselbaugh put the rebound in. Gauntt nearly scored right off the ensuing faceoff but rang the underside of the crossbar.
Bridgewater would score twice in six seconds to close the third quarter. Graham assisted McLean to make it 14-1 with nine seconds on the clock. Alesandro Gargano won the ground ball off the faceoff and fed McClelland with 0:03 remaining in the period.
Rech, who had a big day on the defensive end, got a goal to open the fourth quarter after another Eagles faceoff win.
It was Senior Day for 16 Eagles who played their final regular season home game- Shawn Bliley, Logan Edwards, Husselbaugh, Becker, Gauntt, Graham, Joe Pellegrino, William Jenkins, Noah Ross, Jake Pangle, Calabrese, Matthew Myers, Jared Barley, Phelan Burns, Anderson and Gargano.
Bridgewater (4-4, 4-4 ODAC) will travel to Randolph on Wednesday.
