LEXINGTON, Va. - The Bridgewater College bats came alive in the top of the 10th inning Wednesday night as the Eagles scored eight runs to defeat Washington and Lee, 10-2, in ODAC action.
The Eagles trailed 1-0 heading to the top of the fifth inning, but a run-scoring double by Jarret Biesecker pulled the Eagles even.
W&L went to the ninth inning with a 2-1 lead, but the Eagles pushed across the tying run. Jacob Grabeel led off and reached on an infield error and then moved to second on Brandan Hartman's sacrifice bunt. Pinch-hitter Mason Mitchell came through with the clutch hit when he lined a single to right-center, scoring Grabeel to tie the score at 2-2.
Jeffrey Snider led off the 10th inning with a bunt single and moved all the way around to third on Jonathan Sexton's sac bunt. Brett Tharp walked and stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Kevin Navedo then crushed a triple to the gap in left-center field, chasing home two runs for a 4-2 Bridgewater lead.
Navedo's triple was the first of eight consecutive base hits for the Eagles. With the infield in, Grabeel singled through the left side, scoring Navedo for a 5-2 Eagles' lead. Hartman followed with a base hit to left and Kyle Carlson added a single to right, scoring Grabeel to make it 6-2. Biesecker, Hunter Clever and Snider followed with run-scoring singles to push the margin to 9-2. The final run of the inning scored on Tharp's groundout to put the Eagles up 10-2.
Six Bridgewater pitchers - Hunter Mohr, Waring Garber, James Swart, William Flanagan, Tucker Hrasky and Nick Griffin - combined to strike out 17 batters while holding the Gererals to two-runs on 10 hits. Hrasky picked up the win, allowing one run on two hits in 2.1 innings of work. The lefty struck out five batters.
The Eagles finished the contest with 16 hits, led by Biesecker's 4-for-5 night. Grabeel had three hits while Snider and Navedo added two hits each.
The victory evened the Eagles' record at 6-6 overall and 5-5 in the ODAC.
The Eagles return to action Saturday when they host Roanoke in a conference doubleheader.
