Man-Advantage Sends Eagles to First Semifinals

Box Score

SALEM, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team scored five goals man-up and another shorthanded as they reached their first ODAC semifinal with a 13-11 playoff win at Roanoke.

Kyle Graham had four goals and four assists, while Connor McLean had four goals and an assist and Eric Husselbaugh added a goal and four helpers.

Robbie Noyes made 12 saves in the cage and picked up eight ground balls. Mason Gauntt totaled 13 ground balls while winning 16-of-28 faceoffs.

Bridgewater took a 6-2 lead midway through the second quarter.

Husselbaugh found Justin Calabrese with a great feed through the defense to the weak side to get BC on the board first.

A pair of outside rips from Hunter Becker and Graham gave Bridgewater a 3-1 lead after one period.

Man-up opportunities helped Bridgewater extend the lead in the second quarter.

Graham scored on a power play to make it 4-2. After Jared Barley out-hustled two Maroons to the end line on a missed shot attempt, Calabrese would score on the next possession after a Roanoke flag. BC drew another flag right off the faceoff, and a quick wrister from Husselbaugh made it 6-2.

The Maroons ended the half with three unanswered to make it a one-goal game at the break, but Bridgewater's special teams responded with three in the next quarter.

After a power play goal from McLean, Graham bounced a shot off the underside of the bar and in on another man-advantage. Husselbaugh then drew a double-team on the penalty kill and found a wide-open McLean for a 9-6 lead.

It was the start of four straight Bridgewater goals set up by nice Husselbaugh feeds, three of them to McLean, including two in a row that gave BC a 12-7 lead heading into the final period.

The Maroons attempted to rally in the fourth and Bridgewater's penalty kill had to made a key stop to protect the 13-11 lead with three minutes remaining, with Noyes denying Luca Docking.

Bridgewater improves to 6-4 after the Eagles' first-ever playoff victory, and will travel to face top-seeded Washington & Lee on Thursday in the semifinals.
