Strong Second Half Lifts Eagles Past Comets

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team outscored Capital University 6-1 in the third quarter on its way to a 12-10 victory at Jopson Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon. 

The Basics

How It Happened

  • Bridgewater got on the board first as Grant Nyland notched his first goal of the season with a helper from Hunter Becker, who finished the day with four assists, to take a 1-0 advantage two minutes into the game.
  • Chris Martel added another goal less than 90 seconds later to push the lead to 2-0, but the Comets fired back with a pair of goals to tie the game with 6:26 left in the opening quarter. Another Martel score with under 20 seconds showing on the clock gave BC a 3-2 edge after one period of play.
  • The second quarter was all Capital as the Comets fired off four goals, including a pair of scores from Mason Spaulding, to go ahead 6-3 at the half.
  • Brenden Pelton pushed the Comets' lead to four goals after leading off the third with a goal, but Capital failed to find the back of the net for the next 15 minutes of game time as the Eagles rattled off six-consecutive goals. Lucas Johnson started the scoring with 11:35 left in the period, while Martel tallied four goals in the quarter, including one as time expired, to set the Eagles in front, 9-7, entering the final quarter.
  • Spaulding got the Comets within one goal three minutes into the final frame, but goes from Trent Cheyney, Martel and Connor McLean gave the Eagles another four goal lead, 12-8, with four minutes remaining in regulation.
  • The Comets were able to strike back for a pair of goals in the game's final 90 seconds, but it was not enough as Bridgewater held on for a 12-10 tally. 

Match Notes

  • Martel led all scorers with a career-high seven goals, while McLean recorded another two goals after registering five goals in the season opener. 
  • Cheyney, Nyland and Johnson figured in for the remaining goals.
  • Hayden Gourley recorded two assists, while Becker's four helpers led the game.
  • Faceoff specialist Gabriel Alexander led the game with nine ground balls as he went 12-for-19 in faceoffs. Colby Smith and Becker each finished with four ground balls a piece.
  • Grayson Rech caused three turnovers to lead the Eagles.
  • Capital held a 45-41 edge in ground balls, while the Eagles held a 48-23 advantage in shots.
  • Sam McInturf stopped 16 of the 28 shots on frame, while Robbie Noyes made six saves on 16 shots on goal.
  • Bridgewater was nearly perfect in clearing attempts, finishing at 17-of-19, while the Comets completed just 12-of-23 clearing attempts.

  • The Eagles travel to Philly next Saturday, Feb. 26, for a neutral-site competition against RPI. The contest will be played on the campus of Penn and will begin at 2 pm.
