Men's Lacrosse Downs Marlins for First ODAC Win

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team easily earned a 24-5 victory against Virginia Wesleyan in its ODAC opener on Sunday afternoon.

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 24, Virginia Wesleyan 5
  • Records: Bridgewater 5-2, 1-0 ODAC, Virginia Wesleyan 3-3, 0-1 ODAC

How It Happened

  • Bridgewater scored less than a minute into the game as Hunter Becker got the scoring going. Trent Cheyney notched another goal with 10:34 left in the first period, 2-0.
  • VWU got one back before Connor McLean tallied back-to-back goals to push the lead to 4-1. 
  • The Marlins got one more back, but Chris Martel ended the first quarter with a score to push the ead back to three goals at 5-2. VWU never got any closer.
  • The Eagles outscored the home side 7-0 in the second quarter, including three goals from Martel, to jump ahead 12-2 at the break.
  • The third quarter was also all Bridgewater with seven more unanswered goals as the Eagles assumed an 18-2 edge. 
  • Virginia Wesleyan added three more scores in the final quarter, but Bridgewater netted six more, including Grayson Rech and Gysbertus Metten recording goals.

Match Notes

  • In another career milestone, Martel passed the 100-point plateau for his career with another six-goal performance. He also picked up a ground ball.
  • Becker (3 G, 3 A) and McLean (4 G, 2 A) each finished with game-high six points
  • Gabriel Alexander notched two goals, the first two of his collegiate career, to go with 11 ground balls. The faceoff specialist won 15-of-17 faceoffs for the game and combined 32-of-39 for the week. 
  • Hayden Gourley tallied five points for the day with a game-high four assists with a goal. He also grabbed five ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers.
  • Colby Smith and Bryce Burgit each tallied goals in the victory, as well.
  • Sam Homick picked up three ground balls and caused a team-high three turnovers.
  • Robbie Noyes played the first 45 minutes between the pipes, making three saves on five shots faced. Tyler Carney finished out the game and stopped four shots.
  • Bridgewater peppered the Marlins with 57 total shots, including 38 on target. The Eagles also picked up 56 ground balls, compared to just 27 from the Marlins.
  • The Eagles were nearly perfect on clear attempts, ending the day 30-for-32.

Up Next

  • The Eagles return to action on Wednesday, March 16, as they look to remain undefeated on home turf. They play host to North Central (Ill.) with opening faceoff scheduled for 4 pm.
