Eagles Fly to Victory over Wilkes

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team picked up a 17-10 victory against Wilkes at the Jopson Athletic Complex on Tuesday evening.

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 17, Wilkes 10
  • Records: Bridgewater 4-2, Wilkes 3-3

How It Happened

  • Bridgewater netted the first score of the game as Eric Leasner scored his first goal of the season with an assist from Hunter Becker, who was named to the USILA National Team of the Week prior to the start of the contest.
  • Leasner added his second point of the day with an assist on Colby Smith's score at the 12:57 mark to push the Eagles ahead 2-0.
  • Just as quickly as BC assumed a 2-0 lead, the Colonels responded with a pair of goals to tie the contest at 2-2.
  • Bridgewater tallied the game's next four goals to go ahead 6-2. 
  • The Colonels started the second quarter with a man-up goal to trim the deficit to 6-3, but that was as close as the vistors got for the remainder of the contest.
  • The Eagles went on another 4-0 scoring run to move the lead to 10-3 capped by a goal from Chris Martel on a helper from Hayden Gourley.
  • Trent Cheyney added one more tally before the half to set Bridgewater ahead 11-5 at the break.
  • The Eagles added another six goals in the second half to hold off Wilkes for a 17-10 final.

Match Notes

  • Connor McLean, who eclipsed the 100-point milestone for his career this past weekend, led the Eagles with three goals and also picked up a ground ball and caused one turnover.
  • Smith, Sam Homick, Martel, Cheyney and Korey Polo all finished the game with two goals, while Martel also contributed an assist. He now sits at 98 career points.
  • Jackson Wicker scored his first collegiate goal midway through the fourth quarter off an assist from Lucas Johnson.
  • Robbie Noyes stopped 12 shots, while Wilkes goalie Ryan Lasher made 26 saves as the Eagles scattered 61 shots in the game compared to just 30 by the Colonels.
  • Grayson Rech caused three turnovers to lead the game, while Gabriel Alexander paced both sides with 14 ground balls. Alexander went an impressive 17-for-22 in faceoffs.
  • Joshua Huffman picked up four ground balls, while Samuel Sharps matched that number and also went 5-for-8 in faceoffs.
  • For the game, the Eagles picked up 53 ground balls.

  • The Eagles return to action on Saturday, March 12, as they travel to Virginia Wesleyan to open ODAC play. The contest is scheduled to begin at 3 pm.
