Baseball Splits with Hampden-Sydney

HAMPDEN SYDNEY, Va.  – The Bridgewater College baseball team split a doubleheader today with Hampden-Sydney winning the first game 4-2 and losing the second game 10-5.

 Game One

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater – 4, Hampden-Sydney – 2
  • Records: Bridgewater (21-11, 8-5); Hampden-Sydney (17-11, 9-5)

How It Happened

  • The game was held scoreless into the bottom half of the fourth when Hampden-Sydney struck first to go up 1-0.
  • BC responded in the top half of the fifth with two runs of its own. Brett Tharp and Camden Herron were the first two batters of the inning and were hit by pitches. Jarret Biesecker then walked and with the bases loaded Jeffrey Snider was hit by a pitch, Tharp scored as a result. Kevin Navedo followed Snider up drawing a walk and scoring Herron.
  • The score would stay 2-1 into the eighth inning where the Eagles would add to their lead. Collin Reid led off with a double to left center, a few batters later, Herron would drive in Reid on a fielder's choice.
  • HSC scored one in the bottom of the eighth to make it 3-2, but Bridgewater added to its lead in the ninth. Snider doubled to right field and Hunter Clever drove him in on a single to finish off the Tigers.

Match Notes

  • Reid Long continued his dominant year on the mound tossing seven innings and striking out three batters to improve his record to 8-1 on the season. Tharp came in for the eighth and ninth inning to earn his ninth save of the season. Long now leads the conference in wins by two, and Tharp is atop the conference in saves.
  • Snider, Navedo, Clever and Herron each had an RBI.
  • Navedo and Reid each had two hits.
  • Biesecker and Clever each stole a base, Tharp stole two.

Game Two

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater – 5, Hampden-Sydney – 10
  • Records: Bridgewater (21-12, 8-6); Hampden-Sydney (18-11, 10-5)

How It Happened

  • The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Bridgewater would respond with a run of its own in the top of the third. Kevin Navedo drove in Jeffrey Snider on a double down the left field line after Snider got on base on a fielder's choice to make it 3-1 Tigers.
  • HSC broke the game open in the bottom of the third scoring six runs to make the score 9-1 and the Eagles spent the rest of the contest trying to recover from the big inning.
  • Down by eight runs the team scored once in the top of the fourth. Collin Reid led off the inning with a single and Camden Herron followed that up with a single to left field with Reid advancing to third. Jonathan Sexton was next up and grounded out but drove in Reid to make it a 9-2 HSC lead.
  • In the sixth inning after two singles from Hunter Clever and Reid, Brett Tharp hit a three-run homer to left field to make it a four-run lead.
  • The Tigers added one more in the seventh and the Eagles couldn't complete the comeback losing 10-5.

Match Notes

  • Waring Garber started the game on the mound and pitched two innings. Nick Griffin followed Garber with 0.2 innings, James Swart then pitched 2.1 and Tucker Hrasky finished the game with three innings.
  • Garber, Swart and Hrasky each struck out three batters.
  • Tharp went 1-2 with a run scored and led the team with three RBIs.
  • Reid went 2-4 and scored twice.
  • Navedo and Sexton each drove in one run.

Up Next

  • With six games remaining on the schedule the Eagles currently sit in fifth in the ODAC and will be home for the remainder of the season. They'll play Shenandoah on Wednesday, April 20 with first pitch at 4 p.m.
