Eagles Fall in Nail-Biter at Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team fell to Virginia Wesleyan, 11-10, in the final moments of the ODAC contest on Wednesday night.

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 10, Virginia Wesleyan 11
  • Records: Bridgewater 4-10, 2-4 ODAC; Virginia Wesleyan 8-5, 5-0 ODAC

How It Happened

  • The first quarter was all Marlins as VWU scored three times in the opening period to hold a 3-0 lead after the first 15 minutes.
  • The Eagles got two back to start the second quarter as Kaity Petersheim scored back-to-back goals to trim the lead down to 3-2. 
  • The home team scored another to jump back ahead by two goals, but Ashley Venit and Jenna Entsminger each netted goals to close out the half tied at 4-4
  • The second half began with VWU taking the lead against at 5-4 with 10:15 left in the third. Allison burris scored less than a minute later to tie the game once again.
  • Va. Wesleyan scored back-to-back goals from Helen Kennedy-Butler to take a two-goal lead with 7:15 on the clock, but Petersheim got her hat-trick goal with under two minutes left to go to the fourth quarter trailing 7-6.
  • The Eagles took their first lead of the contest off a quarter-opening goal from Entsminger followed by a man-up goal from Madeline Magill, 8-7.
  • Aunnie Hacker scored off an assist from Lauren Roberts to go up by two goals with 9:30 left to play.
  • Virginia Wesleyan mounted a comeback and scored the game's next four goals, including one under 30 seconds, before Entsminger scored again to make it an 11-10 game with 15 seconds to go.
  • The Eagles controlled the draw and took a timeout to set up with less than five seconds to play, but could not get off a shot as the Marlins held on for an 11-10 victory. 

Match Notes

  • Despite the loss, Roberts grabbed four draw controls to give her 85 on the season, which breaks the Eagles' single-season draw control record. This comes a game after Roberts set the single-game draw control record with 13 draws against Randolph less than a week ago.
  • Entsminger and Petersheim each recorded hat tricks in the loss, while Burris, Hacker, Magill and Venit also added to the scoresheet. Hacker tallied an assist for a two-point game.
  • Entsminger also caused a pair of turnovers and picked up three ground balls.
  • Rachael Robinson made 11 saves in all 60 minutes and picked up a game-high five ground balls 

Up Next

  • The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, April 26, as they travel to Ferrum for their final road game of the regular season. The game is set to begin at 5 pm.
