Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College men's tennis team defeated Guilford on Tuesday, 5-3, to advance to the ODAC semifinals for the first time since 2017.
The Eagles opened up by taking all three of the doubles matches. At the top spot, senior Canon Secord and freshman Matthew Leonard picked up a 8-2 victory. Sophomore Gabe Elder and freshman Mark Gordon teamed up for a convincing 8-2 win at the No. 2 spot. Finishing off the sweep was senior Matthew Gordon and junior Noah Hughes as they came from behind to win 8-6 at the No. 3 spot.
The match came down to singles as the Quakers picked up wins at the two, three and four spots but the fight from BC did not waiver.
Secord added to his already impressive win tally with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot to make the team score 4-3.
The clinching win came at the No. 5 slot where it has most of the season as Leonard prevailed 6-3, 6-2.
With the win, BC advances to the semifinals of the ODAC tournament for the first time in half a decade. The semifinal round will take place on Saturday, May 7 at Washington and Lee and the Eagles will take on the Generals at a time to be determined.
