ALTOONA, Pa. - The Bridgewater College men's golf team traveled to Penn State Altoona for the Sinking Valley Invitational two-day tournament Sunday. The men closed out the first day in fifth among 20 teams in competition. The Eagles were led by freshman Jackson Baugher who leads all golfers with a +2 (72) through one round.
Franklin & Marshall placed first, Mount Aloysios took second, and Penn State Altoona third for the top three on the team leaderboard.
Baugher did not score above par on any of the front nine holes, helping to stay at even par (35). Then, on holes 12, 14, and 15 Baugher landed three birdies but still saw three bogies and a double bogey to push the first-round score slightly higher for a 72.
Senior Brandon Washburn was Bridgewater's next finisher and put up a top-15 finish after 18 holes. Washburn weathered the tougher holes well after three bogies on holes three, four, and five. The senior was able to salvage the first round with two strong holes at No. 9 and 17. Washburn scored 76. Sophomore Cai Clark also landed a top-15 finish in a seven-way tie with Washburn. Clark also had two birdies.
Bridgewater's next finisher was freshman Jayden Hendricks. Hendricks saw nine strokes above par but measured up two birdies nicely at No. 6 and 17 to score a 77 and a 22nd finish in an 11-way tie.
Sophomore Walker Gillespie finished as Bridgewater's fifth scorer with a 78 and 33rd place individually in a five-way tie.
The Eagles return tomorrow, Oct. 6 for the second round at Sinking Valley Invitational in Altoona, Pa. The shotgun start will begin at 9 a.m.
