How It Happened
-
Despite an early three-goal lead, the Eagles found themselves scrambling to maintain controlled possessions while UL gradually worked efficiently up the field. Once the Hornets grasped the lead in the second quarter, they never let the Eagles back in and continually built up their lead late in the second half.
-
Although the Eagles struggled to hold onto a steady lead, the first quarter shaped up to be a close battle between the two. Paige Mayers opened the scoring in the first 20 seconds of action, taking a drive all the way for the 1-0 opening lead. Then, seconds later, Grace Pietro bumped the score to two attacking the crease and laying one in the back of the net. The opening scoring surge continued for BCE as Paige Overeem knocked another goal for the 3-0 lead. However, the Hornets slowly began their strong attacking sequences to work their way back into the game. UL found the net for the first point of the game at the eight-minute mark.
-
The Hornets continued to lunge forward, cutting the deficit to one with a goal in the first minute of the second quarter. The Eagles did not let up despite the nagging Lynchburg offense as Mayers got her third goal of the game to make it a 5-3 game. Not long after did the Hornets respond with a goal; keeping stride with the Eagles. Then, at the five-minute mark UL evened the score at five apiece with a man-up advantage. The Hornets continued their strong attacking sequence and jumped to 7-5 with three minutes to go in the first half. Mayers, working diligently, laid her fourth goal in trying to keep the Eagles within striking distance to end the half only down one.
-
UL would not slow down as the eighth goal was sent in seconds into the second half. Mayers, once again, tried answering back to stay close marking her fifth goal on the day. After yet another goal from Mayers, the Hornets went on a dominant 4-0 scoring run with a 12-7 lead and 10 minutes left in regulation. Mayers got another pair of goals to go her way trailing by three at 12-9, but more of the same attacking sequence ensued leaving the Eagles scrambling to hold down a steady scoring burst. The Eagles could not complete the comeback in the fourth, falling short 14-10.
