SALEM, Va. - The Bridgewater College men's track and field team opened competition at the Bast-Cregger Invitational Friday afternoon.
Trey Birchett competed in the men's high jump to open competition for the Eagles. Birchett cleared 1.99 meters on his first attempt, setting a new personal best, and the 31st best mark in division III. Birchett was unable to clear the 2.04-meter mark, but he was able to claim first for the event.
Walker Knicely was the lone BC entry in pole vault. Knicely placed fifth after clearing 4.20 meters on his second attempt.
Freshman Jayden Brown was the first to step on the track for the Eagles, as he competed in the men's 60-meter hurdles. Brown stopped the clock at 8.53 seconds to qualify for the finals. Brown is scheduled to run in the finals from lane six tomorrow at 12:43 p.m.
BC placed a group of entries into the men's 60-meter dash. Jayden Davenport, Kyle Galloway, Gian Sirico, and Ben Baker all raced in the fourth heat, while Max Madsen ran in the sixth heat. Madsen and Davenport both clocked 7.12 to qualify for the semis. Later in the evening, Davenport narrowly edged out Madsen for the final spot in the finals, crossing the line thousandths of a second faster. Davenport is scheduled to compete in the finals from lane eight tomorrow at 12:55 p.m.
The Eagles's distance squad had an impressive showing in the men's 1000-meter collegiate open. Gavin Diehl clocked 2:38.59 and finished second, ahead of several division II competitors. Malakai Wettig finished fifth, clocking 2:40.40. Kaedon Howley followed, placing seventh with a time of 2:43.55.
Alongside the previously mentioned finalists, BC has several competitors in track and field events tomorrow. The Eagles begin competition tomorrow at 11 a.m.
