JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - The Bridgwater College men's golf team kicked off the Camp Lejeune Invitational with a 10th-place finish among 24 teams Friday.
After the first 18 holes, Jayden Hendricks positioned himself with the lowest score for the Eagles with a one-under-par 71 in an impressive showing against tough nationally ranked programs. Hendricks laid down three birdies including an eagle on a par 5 at No. 18. The junior finished the first round in a six-way tie for 10th place and is four strokes back from the leader.
The second scorer for the Eagles was Brandon Washburn. Washburn carded a 73 and steadied to par for 11 holes. He included a birdie on No. 4. He adjusted after two bogeys on No. 8 and 14. After the first round, Washburn sits in 23rd place in an 11-way tie.
Jackson Baugher finished out the first round as the third scorer for the Eagles with a 76 and 60th place. Baugher recovered six holes at bogey and responded with three birdies. Walker Gillespie followed closely behind with a 77 and 73rd-place after 18 holes. Gillespie faced a double bogey on hole 14 but maintained competitive scores and under pars on two holes including an eagle on a par 3.
The fifth finisher from day one was Will Layton carding a 79, respectively. Layton stands in 86th place in an eight-way tie.
No. 10 Oglethorpe currently holds sole possession of first place with an even par 288 and is nine strokes ahead of Bridgewater.
The Eagles return tomorrow for the second round at Paradise Point Golf Course.
