JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - The Bridgewater College men's golf team were back in action for the final round of the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate and posted the best single-day team score in program history.
After being seven shots back headed into the final round, the Eagles fired a program record six-under par to finish in second place in a nationally competitive field. They came up just two shots short of Drew University but knocked off #10 Oglethorpe University and many other competitive programs. The team finished the three-day tournament at just three over par after starting the tournament nine over after day 1.
"I'm super proud of how hard the guys fought today and how they were able to put the leading teams under pressure all the way until the end," said head coach Nick Schlickerieder. "To fire the score we did on a course where conditions made that tough is super impressive. It gives us a lot of confidence and momentum headed into the conference championship next week and I can't wait to see what they can do."
The Eagles were lead throughout the week by senior Brandon Washburn who fired a final round 71 to shoot a collegiate best total three-under par and finish in a tie for third place.
The low round of the day for the Eagles came from sophomore Walker Gillespie who shot a four-under par 68 to bounce back after struggling early on in the event. He finished in a tie for 21st.
Junior Jayden Hendricks also had an impressive round on Sunday shooting a two-under par 70 without a bogey which is his best score in his career. He went on to finish in a tie for 23rd.
Freshman Jackson Baugher played steadily throughout the tournament and brought in the fourth score for the Eagles on Sunday firing a 73. Baugher wrapped up his tournament in a tie for 29th.
The Eagles will be back in action next weekend at the ODAC championship in Amherst, Va., where they look to claim their first conference championship in over a decade.
