FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Bridgewater College opened
its baseball regular season Sunday with a doubleheader split at
Methodist in the ODAC/USAS Challenge.
Methodist won the opener 8-3 while the Eagles took the second
game 10-3.
The Monarchs scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning
in the opener and never traled.
The Eagles managed just five hits, two of those by freshman DH
Jonathan Mason.
In the second game, the Eagles rode a solid start by senior Drew
Elkins and some lights out relief work to earn the split.
The Eagles took the lead in the fifth when Devon Snow and Drew
Easter reached on singles. Both runners scored on a double by
Mitchell Edwards, gving the Eagles a 4-2 lead.
Methodist nicked Elkins for a run in the bottom of the fifth,
but the Eagles got that run back in the sixth when Kevin Kirk
doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Andrew
Hacker.
Relief pitchers Kevin Chandler and Joseph Lucas silenced the
Methodist bats on one hit the rest of the way while the Eagles
added five more run to finish off the 10-3 victory.
Elkins picked up the victory with five innings of work. He
allowed three runs on four hits while striking out three and
walking three.
Chandler pitched 2.2 inning allowing just one hit while Lucas
finished up with 1.1 innings of no-hit relief while striking out
two batters. Brett Howell , Edwards and Andy Chrismer each added
two hits for the Eagles.
Hacker led the Eagles at the plate with two hits, a pair of
sacrifice flies and three RBIs.
