EMORY, Va. - The Bridgewater College Eagles maintained their
grip on first place in the ODAC standings with a doubleheader sweep
Friday at Emory & Henry. The Eagles won the opener 9-4 and then
rolled to a 25-3 win in the second game.
The Eagles scored three runs in the top of the first inning in
the opener. Kevin Kirk singled and Mitchell Edwards reached on
catcher's interference to put two runners. Andy Chrismer's grounder
forced Edwards at second, leaving runners at the corners. Brett
Howell put the Eagles on the board with a double and Andrew Hacker
plated a run with a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead. Jonathan Mason
followed with a run-scoring double, making the score 3-0.
BC made it 5-1 with two more runs in the second. Drew Easter led
off with a single and moved to second on an error. Easter scored on
Kirk's single to make the score 4-1. A single by Edwards put
runners at the corners and the runners pulled off a double steal
with Kirk scoring on the play.
After the Wasps scored once in the bottom of the second, the
Eagles added two more runs in the fourth. Kirk singled, Edwards
walked and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Kirk scored on a
sac fly by Howell and Edwards scored on a single by Hacker, giving
BC a 7-2 lead.
E&H chipped away and pulled to within 7-4 before the Eagles
finished their scoring output with two in the seventh. Mason led
off the inning with a solo homer to make it 8-4. Drew Elkins
doubled and later scored on an error for the final margin.
Alex Foltz turned in a complete-game effort on the mound to pick
up the victory. He allowed 10 hits and four runs, just one of which
was earned. He struck out four and walked two.
Kirk and Mason led the offense. Kirk was 3-for-5 with three runs
scored while Mason was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
The second game was all BC as the Eagles scored 25 runs on 21
hits. Alex Nuttycombe paced the offense with a 3-for-4 effort
and six RBIs, three coming on a homer. Kirk finished the day
3-for-3 and Edwards was 2-for-2 with four RBIs and a home run.
Easter was 1-for-1 with four RBIs while Howell finished 2-for-5 and
Hacker was 3-for-7.
Casey Hartman pitched six strong innings to get the win on the
mound. He allowed three hits and three runs, just two earned. He
struck out five and walked three.
The Eagles are now 15-12 overall and 11-2 in the ODAC.
