MOBILE VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College Eagles split Sunday's baseball doubleheader with Juniata College, losing the first game 8-7 and winning Game 2 by a score of 4-3.

Bridgewater squandered a three-run lead in the ninth to suffer their first loss of the season.

Starter Nick Corbin gave the hosts a solid start in the opener with seven innings of work. He allowed three runs on six hits and struck out six batters.

Bridgewater scored first on a run-scoring groundout by Bryan Sanderson in the first, but Juniata evened the score on a solo homer by Anthony Lombardo.

A sacrifice fly by Cavin Clyde in the second gave Bridgewater a 2-1 lead and a two-run homer by Sanderson in the fifth put the Eagles on top 4-1.

Juniata got two runs back in the sixth to pull to within one. Cody Krepps delivered the big hit with a two-run single, making the score 4-3.

Bridgewater added two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to lead 7-3. Justin Petock reached on an error to lead off the sixth and Darren Yoder followed with a bunt single. Clyde doubled down the left field line to chase home one run and Nick Fulk plated the second run with a sacrifice fly, giving Bridgewater a 6-3 lead.

In the seventh, Brendan Howell doubled and Petock walked. Yoder singled to center, scoring Howell for a 7-3 Bridgewater lead.

Juniata added an unearned run in the eighth and then scored four in the ninth against the Eagles bullpen to take an 8-7 lead. Brad Medellin singled to center with one out to drive in two runs, cutting Bridgewater's lead to 7-6. Joe Sforza singled to the hole at short for the game-tying hit and Eric Grace drove home the go-ahead run with a single to right.

With a runner on and one out in the bottom of the ninth, Mario DeYulis took to the mound and recorded the final two outs to clinch the victory.

DeYulis was on the mound to start the second game for Juniata and he and Bridgewater freshman lefty Jordan Showalter hooked up in a classic pitcher's duel.

Showalter allowed just two hits in seven innings on the mound, but when he left after retiring Juniata in the top of the eighth, he trailed 1-0 due to an unearned run in sixth.

Bridgewater got Showalter off the hook with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Derrik Walling was hit by a pitch and Fulk walked, ending the day for DeYulis. Sanderson then put the Eagles ahead with a two-run triple to center and pinch-hitter Ryan Leake followed with a single to left for a 3-1 Bridgewater lead.

The teams traded runs in the eighth. Juniata scored on Medellin's two-out triple to left, but Bridgewater countered in the bottom of the inning. With two on and one out, Nick Fulk bunted for a single to load the bases. Sanderson followed with a sacrifice fly to center for a 4-2 lead.

Juniata threatened in the ninth when singles by Sforza and Krepps put runners at the corners with no outs. Robert Gallet fanned pinch-hitter Kyle Pannebaker and Bridgewater catcher Hunter Hensley threw out Krepps as he tried to steal second. The runner from third scored on that play, but Gallet retired the next batter on a grounder to short to preserve the victory.

Sanderson had a big day for the Eagles as he finished 3-for-7 in the two games with six RBIs. Fulk was 4-for-7 in the doubleheader.

Bridgewater, now 5-1, returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Ferrum College. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
