Baseball Splits Doubleheader At Emory & Henry

EMORY, Va. - Bridgewater bounced back from a first game loss and salvaged a split by defeating Emory & Henry, 14-1, in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. The Wasps took the opener, 7-4, the first win for E&H over the Eagles since the 2000 season.

Bridgewater scored first in the opener with a run in the top of the third. Zach Hynes reached on a fielding error to lead off the inning. With Hynes at second, Darren Yoder singled through the left side of the infield, scoring Hynes with the first run of the game.

The Wasps (7-8, 4-3 ODAC) answered in the bottom of the inning as the hosts took advantage of a costly Eagles error to score four unearned runs. With two outs and Brett Johnson on second, Caleb Rotton walked to keep the inning alive against Eagles starter Nick Corbin. Bransen Christopher reached on a fielding error by third baseman Justin Petock as Johnson scored to tie the game. The next batter, Connor Wise, belted a three-run homer to put the Wasps on top, 4-1.

Bryan Sanderson led off the fourth for the Eagles with a base hit and with one out, Petock singled. Hynes drew a two-out walk to load the sacks and Yoder worked E&H starter Ty Hill for a walk to force in a run. Petock scored when Hunter Hensley's grounder was misplayed for an error by E&H third baseman Rotton as the Eagles pulled to within 4-3.

The Wasps got the run back in the bottom half of the inning. One out singles by Ben Barnett, Hunter Jeffries and Johnson loaded the bases. Jordan Woullard then worked Corbin for a walk to force in a run, giving E&H a 5-3 lead.

Bridgewater punched out four hits in the fifth, but managed just one run. Sanderson singled with one out and moved to second on a balk. Sanderson scored on a single by Petock, making the score 5-4. Bay Liskey and Hynes each singled to load the bases, but Yoder flied out to center to end the inning.

The score remained 5-4 until the bottom of the sixth when the Wasps pushed across two runs. Jeffries walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Woullard singled to put runners at the corners and Rotton singled to left, plating Jeffries to make the score 6-4. With runners still at the corners, Christopher grounded out to first, but Rotton scored on the play, giving E&H a 7-4 lead.

Hill worked a scoreless seventh and reliever Aaron Sparks pitched two hitless innings to close out the Wasps' 7-4 victory.

Petock was 3-for-4 with a run scored and one run batted in and Sanderson was 2-for-5 to lead the offense in the opener.

Bridgewater took control of the second game with four runs in the second inning and three more in the third.

Petock led off the second with a double and Ryan Leake followed with a homer to right, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead. With one out Tyler Hoffman singled and scored on a double by Nick Fulk to make it 3-0. Fulk scored when centerfielder Johnson dropped Cavin Clyde's fly ball as the Eagles took a 4-0 lead.

In the third, Brendan Howell singled with one out and Petock followed with a two-run homer, making the score 6-0. With two outs, Hynes singled and moved into scoring position when Hoffman walked. Yoder singled to center, scoring Hynes for a 7-0 lead.

The Eagles added a single run in the fourth. Clyde led off with a single and moved to third on a single by Sanderson. Clyde scored on Howell's sacrifice fly, making the score 8-0.

Emory & Henry scored its only run in the bottom of the fourth when Wise belted a solo homer off Eagles starter Corey Armentrout.

Bridgewater added another run in the fifth when Fulk singled, stole second and scored on Clyde's fly ball to deep center.

The Eagles tacked on three more runs in the seventh. Yoder doubled and scored on Clyde's two-out single for a 10-1 lead. Sanderson singled to left and Clyde scored when the ball was misplayed in the outfield. After Howell walked, Petock chased Sanderson home with a double to make the score 12-1.

Bridgewater completed the scoring with single runs in the eighth and ninth. In the eighth, Dustin Garst was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a single by Ryan Fitzgerald. Garst scored on a wild pitch for a 13-1 margin.

In the ninth, Andrew Saunders doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch. Saunders scored on a sacrifice fly by Trevor Walzl for the final run of the contest.

Armentrout worked six solid innings to gain the victory on the mound. The lefty allowed one run on three hits while striking  out six and walking three. Tyler Slanovec, Tyler Conley and Kyle Henshaw each tossed one hitless inning to finish off the game.

 Petock was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored to lead the offense in the second game. Fulk, Clyde, Sanderson, Hynes and Yoder added two hits each to the Eagles' 19-hit attack.

Bridgewater, now 11-6 overall and 4-2 in the ODAC, returns to action Tuesday against Washington and Lee. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
