BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College snapped a 3-3 tie with six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Sunday afternoon to defeat Stevenson University, 9-3, in non-conference baseball action.
The win is the 20th of the season for the Eagles and their ninth in a row.
Bridgewater jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the third off Stevenson starter Brandon Franke. Nick Fulk led off with a single and stole second. Derrik Walling singled to right with Fulk stopping at third when the throw went home. Walling advanced to second on the throw, giving the Eagles runners at second and third and no outs. Fulk scored on a sacrifice fly by Bryan Sanderson and Walling crossed the plate on a single by Justin Petock for a 2-0 Eagles lead.
Stevenson tied the score with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth and grabbed the lead with another run in the sixth.
Eagles starter Jordan Showalter walked the leadoff batter Tom Goulian with a pitch to start the fifth and then hit the next batter, Fred Casper. Both runners moved up on a passed ball and Goulian scored on a groundout by Joe Bentz to put the Mustangs on the board. Casper scored on an infield error as Stevenson tied the score at 2-2.
The visitors grabbed the lead in the sixth. With one out, Scott Merkel singled and stole second. He then scored on a single by Ian Eberly, giving Stevenson a 3-2 lead. The run was the first earned run allowed by the freshman Showalter in 17-plus innings this season.
The Mustangs lead didn't last long as the Eagles scored the tying run in the bottom half of the sixth. Pinch-hitter Dustin Garst reached on an error and pinch-runner Tyler Dawson moved to second on a passed ball. Dawson scored on a single by Cavin Clyde, tying the score at 3-3.
The Eagles broke the game open with six runs in the seventh. With one out, Petock reached on an error and moved to third on a double by Ryan Leake. Damian Reed then grounded a single through the left side of the drawn-in infield to score both runners, putting Bridgewater on top 5-3. Reed advanced to second when the left-fielder misplayed his base hit and he scored from second on a single by Brendan Howell, making the score 6-3. After a strikeout, Hunter Hensley singled to keep the inning alive and Fulk followed with a three-run homer down the line in left, putting the finishing touches on the big inning and giving the Eagles a 9-3 win.
Fulk had a huge day at the plate as Bridgewater's lead-off hitter finished 5-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Walling, Leake, Reed, Clyde and Hensley added two hits each as the Eagles finished the day with 17 hits.
Showalter was impressive in his six innings, but did not factor into the decision. The lefty allowed six hits and three runs with just one of the runs being earned. He struck out five and walked one. Tyler Slanovec got the win with two hitless innings of relief. Slanovec struck out two batters.
Bridgewater, now 20-7, is back in action on Wednesday when the Eagles host Eastern Mennonite. Game time is 4 p.m.
